B) IMHO all Italian engines sound wonderful, except for FIAT's. They have an almost metallic roar to them.

Nothing like the sound of a V-12 at full song! Who needs music when you got all 12 cylinders firing away in such unison? ;)

Unless it's a 183cid (3 liter) V8 NOVI, running it's Offenhauser Engineering built flat plane crankshaft, turning at 8500rpm (unheard of territory in 1941) with its 12" centrifugal supercharger spinning at some 70,000rpm--talk about the music of a racing engine screaming, roaring, and crackling all at once, as if it were the final chord before the end of a race car symphony. Oh, and that engine could smoke the tires at any point in its speed range, with 550hp on tap (by the early 1960's, the Granitelli Brothers had added another thousand rpm's to the redline, and bumped up the horsepower just a bit, to a paltry 800. And, in a Ferguson 4WD chassis, it could still smoke all the tires coming off turns 2 and 4 at Indianapolis.

;) Oh yeah. I like the first comment, about all the people covering their ears, if that was the last thing I heard, the memory would make up for the deafness ;)

I've always enjoyed the Ferrari 312 engine sound.

If it had to be a street car the Porsche Carrera GT really grabs me hard. I was able to see and hear one this past summer and it was unbelievable. Even over the Lamborghini's sounds the GT was beautiful sounding.

The 351 Cleveland in a DeTomaso Pantera at full power sure does it for me... Something about Italian design with that big ol' V8 thundering on...

Oh, those newest racing Vettes are pretty wicked sounding as well.

Andrew, right on about the C6R. I loved hearing them roar by the cameras during the ALMS events. I can only imagine that thunder goes right through your chest!

Heres what a REAL car is suposed to sound like :D

Nah just kidding heres the real video :D

Ah those big cam v8s always sound like they are just barely even running on half it's cylinders and will sputter out at any second.

good ones nick. <_<

i am convinced that the best musical instrument, on the planet, is the internal combustion engine. single cylinder or 18, each produces its own unique symphony.

here is almost 11 minutes of stereophonic bliss from Spa.

As much as I like Porsche and am a huge Porsche fan, and the fact that they are indeed the most winningest sports car in the world, and have kicked Ferrari's butt, there is nothing on Earth that sounds like a V12 Ferrari.

A Ferrari sounds like passion. There are some other awesome sounding cars, the raw power of a big displacement V8, the wherbble of a 5cylinder twin turbo Quattro, the piercing 4 rotor 787B, but there is nothing that sounds like passion like a Ferrari.

Poor Nick, he was born in the wrong decade and he doesn't know it. I am lucky enough to have a heard allot in person. I remeber hearing that Matra v12 sound at the Glen in 1968. Racing Mazda's are pretty wild sounding, the Judd V10, the BMW straight six the list goes on. Mr' Ferrari was right when he said 'there is a melody in the noise". But here is an engine that can sing a song.

All those little bitty engines sound pretty good I guess but you ain't lived until you hear twenty some odd 427 Hi-Riser Fords and 426 Hemi Mopars on a half mile dirt track surrounded by a tall tin fence echoing that rolling thunder back over the grandstands on a cloudy night. The only music sweeter than Emmy Lou Harris on a good night, and her's are all good.

Here's my choice. BRM H-16. It combines the roar and the shriek in one. All these ferraris and Alfas are great and I dig them but listen to this......

Sends a tingle up your spine.

My next favorite is a top fuel motor - hoo boy!

You mean engine like this "little bitty" BMW engine that made 1300 Hp. that is far more power than anything NASCAR has ever seen. This engine was 1.5 Litre(90 Cu.In.)

:P that is hands down.......THE BEST COMMERCIAL EVER!!!!!!!! I am so glad I use V Power in my GTI ;)

You realize you just summed all this up right there? No really, you did :P All those engines were and are epic.

Dale Watts, that's good and those 131's are something else.

Dale Beaver, yeah I know, you keep reminding me! All those you got to see and hear. And those pics you posted up :P are good ones. That BMW engine is wicked, yeah isn't it the F1 motor? Although I agree with Chris, they just don't have the passion.

Andy, I love V12's, V8's, V10's all of them but I've seen a couple videos of this and indeed for it's side it has the PERFECT sound ever. I would kill to have this thing fly by me at full speed on Silverstone, Spa, or Nurburgring! It sent chills up my spine....again!

That Fiat 131 looks like a drift car!! ;)

Here is cool vid for getting the feel of a top fuel car's amazing power and it isn't even moving. Wait for a bit when the crewman go to hold the car down on it's jacks and they hammer the throttle. It is awesome!

Here is a great sequence of record runs at Bonneville. You get a turbine, a fuel motor and an electric. What's great is the doppler effect combined with the motors. The sound quality isn't very good but it is still awesome.
