How about an unmuffled, hopped up flathead V-8? Nothing quite sounds like it.

Those old flatheads do sound good, I do like the sound of a 4.0l Jeep with a gutted cat too, even if it's got nearly 300k on the factory motor and running an otherwise stock type replacement exhaust. Even the 3.8 Chrysler Minivan motors sound nice at idle to me for some odd reason
