dryvr12 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Came back from playing in the snow with my dog when I thought, how would I make snow tires? Cool idea, I thought, anyone do it yet?
Foxer Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Chains WOULD be cool. I once used a set on a TR4A in the winter even! They did come apart at about 65 on the highway finally ... but that was after many trips of about 4 hours when I was stationed at Fort Devens Mass one winter. Chains are available but would be some fine detail work connecting all the pieces.
charlie8575 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I'd use HO or N-scale chain with very thin pieces of brass wire to connect them and then weather with rust-colored paint. Charlie Larkin
dryvr12 Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 I don't have the patience to do that kind of detailing, but I'd love to see someone else do that!
dptydawg Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 (edited) I made up a set of chains for my 1/25th scale Massey tractor. Tractor tires are a little easier to work with because of the added size. However the technique should be the same. The chains are basicly layed out like a ladder. The trick is in the sizing. The rungs should be twist links, while the rails are straight links. I drew the patern out on a pine board then pinned the rail chains in place and attached the rung chains. When the chains are installed the rail chain is about the center line of the side wall. Measure this radius, find the circumfrence and that is the length of the rail. the rung length is the distance from the rail chain up to the tread face + the tread face + the distance down to the other chain. All the chian links should be about 1.5 mm to be in scale. I hope this explanation make sense to you folks Thanks Carl Edited December 23, 2009 by dptydawg
vizio93 Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Really nice job on the chains! You can say that again !!! Thats a nice lookin' tractor
diymirage Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 might be a hair big for cars but im sure this would be workable plus the box is killer http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/?page_id=3&category=10 i never ran chains on my car but i used to use the lawnmower to plow the driveway and i ran chains on that beast one spring i had removed the plow blade but still left the chains on we were grilling outside and after a few beers someone suggested taking the lawnmower mudrunning in the city park down the street we were tearing it up with those chains for 5 minutes before the cops showed up
