Greg Cullinan Posted December 26, 2009 Posted December 26, 2009 I've searched this forum high and low for the better part of today,so if this(as I know it is)is a repetitive question,I apologize.I did read quite a bit of useful information just not specifically what I am looking for. I will purchase a how-to dvd but assume it has more to do with technique. What paints are used in a airbrush? And how?(mixing, cleaning Can I use the small Testors enamels? How? For Xmas my wife bought me a Paasche double action airbrush and a Paasche 1/8 compressor, are these ideal or at least suitable? Where to purchase paints? ready to spray, and online a plus. Thanks very much in advance

Thanks very much in advance Grag you can spray just about any paint through an airbrush. As for thinning, Most paint will spray if thinned to the consistancy of milk. Lacquer will usually thin a bit more. Yes you can use the little bottles of Testors. Their enamels. I hope your wife got you the VL-5. That'll give you the largest spray pattern. As for the compressor, pretty much any will work, the only thing I would recommend is buying an air tank and regulator and hooking the compressor to the tank and regulating the line to the airbrush. Doing this will take the pulsations out of the air supply.
Longbow Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 (edited) I to got a paasche H air brush for Christmas. I bought a Porter Cable air compressor with a six gallon storage tank & built in air regulator.I installed a water in line filter & attached my air hose ,And away I went .I adjusted the air pressure to thirty pounds & airbrushed my 32 Ford roaster with Krylon fusion red that I decanted. The compressor never cut on once. This set up is a vast improvement over my previous set up.Happy dog here in the low country.I brought my air compressor from Lowes for $164.00& the in line water filter for $12.00.Gary Thomason Edited December 27, 2009 by Longbow
cruz Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 This is a cool website I found, it has a lot of useful stuff you might want to see! http://www.howtoairbrush.com/
Greg Cullinan Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 Gramps it is a vl,the compressor has a regulator,so I can hook an air tank up to it?A good idea indeed. Marcos that is a good site, spent some time on there today.I guess the best way to learn is to jump in and do it.I sprayed some water through it to get a feel.Tomorrow I may give it a shot or order some pre-mixed paint and wait for that. Longbow, there"s a glass jar with a filter they call a moisture relief I believe, that is hooked up to the regulator.Would that be the inline water filter? the ones I see on the internet look like they are hooked to the spray gun. Thanks again and one more question. I keep mixing up the types of paint and what is used to thin it?If anyone can explain I will bookmark this and never ask again!
Longbow Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Photos please&do not worry about questions. If know one ask them ,this site would not exist.Gary Thomason
Greg Cullinan Posted December 29, 2009 Author Posted December 29, 2009 This is the compressor my wonderful wife got me,it was a big surprise.I haven't thought of airbrushing til now and I am really intrigued by it.This is what I thought might be the inline filter. Going to look into an air tank as I can see it being a good idea. This is the airbrush itself. I ordered a bunch of ready to spray paint(House of Color) from TCP Global, while I'm waiting I ran to Micheals and grabbed a couple bottles of Creatix. Gave it a test drive and I like it alot.Feels very official Obviously I have alot to learn and have a million questions but with this site, youtube and the internet I should be ok.Thanks
Guest Gramps-xrds Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Greg, it looks like she got you a VL with a no 5 tip assembly. She did good. That moisture trap appears to be a combo regulator and moisture trap. If it is a combo what I'd do when you get an air tank is move the regulator to the tank and run the compressor straight into the tank. That way you'll have control of the air pressure going to the gun and not the tank. You should be good to go and have a lot of fun using it.
MikeMc Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 (edited) Greg two words ...Donn Yost. http://www.oldmansmodels.com/ Go here and spend 19.95 on his painting DVD. He uses the same brush as you have, uses the little jars of testors..makes it simple!!! Bob Downie has published 2 editions of his airbrush book...read them!!! I doubt you will find any better painters than these guys. Donn is the enamel guru and Bob does it with lacquers. PS nice firefighter! Edited December 30, 2009 by MikeMc
crazyjim Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 (edited) Howdy Greg, Please keep on posting with your progress. I've had an airbrush for years but haven't used it. Bought a 3gallon air compressor and hooked it up. Built a spray booth in my shop. My wife bought me kandy color kit from TCP Global for Christmas. I'm ready to go but a little leary of jumping into the airbrush world. I also have a package of white plastic spoons. Edited December 30, 2009 by crazyjim
Longbow Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Jim, That sounds like me to a tee.I got a paasche H airbrush ,built a spray booth and ordered a set of HOK paints.I also have Don Yost`s dvd on order.I did paint my second model with the new airbrush using Krylon red that I decanted & I think that It turned out okay.I going to wait on the dvd before painting my next project.
crazyjim Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Donn Yost's DVD is superb! I've watched it a few times already. Donn uses Testor's bottled enamel (Model Master)and I want to get away from the enamels and into the more "exotic" paints that HOK offers.
Longbow Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I agree that HOk & other lacquer colours are attractive & the choice is mind boggling. The down side is price verses enamels which seem to be available every where,Wal-Mart hardware store etc.etc.The dry time of enamels is a real turn off & a dehydrator is a whole new can of worms.
crazyjim Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I have so much stuff now that it's getting ridiculous. I'm not buying a dehydrator!!
Longbow Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I think that one could be had from a consignment shop or yard sale but you are right to much stuff already.
