WickedWelder Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Wanted to introduce myself. My name is Gary, im 32 and living in Casper WY. I used to build models when i was a kid and stopped when i was 16, but now getting back into it. i have been looking through the forums at everyones projects and all I can say is "Dam you guys are good!" I hope to hone my skills so that one day i will have something worth posting on here. Right now I am building a 1996 Ford Explorer into a trail rig. So far I have made a custom lift, solid axle swap from a CJ-7, builing custom aluminum bumpers front and rear and will be building an exo-cage for it also. The only problem that I have is I have no idea where I can find parts, such as off road parts, or just any custom parts in general. So where do you guys find your stuff at? How do you cast your own parts?
disabled modeler Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Hi Gary, welcome! you can build your own exo cage from soild round plastic using a candle CAREFULLY to quickly heat up the plastic so you can bend it to the desired shapes....just a low dollar trick, but it works with some practice.
Eshaver Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Gary since i'm no " Off road " expert, I would send ya to somebody else . As for resin casting , try aluminite kits to experiment with . Synair .com also is a professional Taxidermy supplier of several dental and Art type epoxy resins that have different charicteristics . Look , give me a P- M as I might be able to explain in detail what I can do to help. Ed Shaver
Abell82 Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 (edited) I have never ordered from them, but I think that you are looking for : http://www.freewebs.com/bigjeepzzresin/ Oh, and welcome! Edited January 12, 2010 by Abell82
WickedWelder Posted January 12, 2010 Author Posted January 12, 2010 Abell82 thanks for the website that is the stuff im looking for, the only bad thing is it says they are no longer taking orders, but thanks anyway. As for the exo-cage I'm using 3/32 welding rod with the flux knocked off. Already have some bent, just need time to do the rest. Is there any other web sites that sell resign parts? Doesnt have to pertain to off road, just want to build up a stock of parts. Also what do i have to do to get some pics on here? Do i need to set up a photobucket account?

WickedWelder Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 THANKS FOR THE INFO, I'VE ALREADY LEARNED ALOT FROM READING ALL THE POSTS. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR TIME AND INFO
Brizio Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Welcome!!! I'm a Jeep guy, and usually I scratch-build all I need for it. If you need help to do something, let me know! If the CJ-7 had a D44 your building gonna be stronger!!!
WickedWelder Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 What do you guys use to detail your engines? such as spark plug wires, battery cables and everything else. Is everything scratch built or is there somewhere to get that stuff. The reason i ask is I have a 79 Bronco that I want to build to match the one I used to have, and I would like to really detail it as much as possible. Thanks for your time. Gary
jeffs396 Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Here's two of the biggest aftermarket parts suppliers Gary: http://www.detailmaster.com/ http://www.modelcargarage.com/ And here's a site with just about every model link you could ever hope for! http://www.socalcarculture.com/modelcarlinks.html Oh yeah, for photos here just set up a Photobucket account or the like & copy & paste your IMG tag from your pics right into your post!
WickedWelder Posted January 15, 2010 Author Posted January 15, 2010 Thanks for the links, I appreciate it.
LDO Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Gary- A great place to get spare parts is other kits. You might only need the tires, but you will get the entire rest of the kit for your stash of spare parts. Also look on ebay in the model section for "junk yard". There are always several auctions for built models and or parts, usually with something in common, i.e. muscle cars, drag cars, etc. I've never looked for off-road junk yards, but I'll bet you could find one sooner or later. If you can get to a big model contest, they usually have a swap meet. You can find lots of out-of-production kits and even some junk yard-type sales.
WickedWelder Posted January 15, 2010 Author Posted January 15, 2010 Thanks, I will look on ebay and see what I can find. Im sure everyone here has seen this website, My linkThis is where I found the 79 Bronco, they seem to have a pretty good selection, and I was happy with the service that I got. Thanks again for all the info.
