I've never used a mechanical shaker, but I've always had good luck using a couple of Crosman BBs in each of my paint jars.

I have to agree with VW Dave. Drop a couple of copper BB's into the jar and start shaking. They stir up just like the rattle cans. Just make sure if you are transfering the paint to an airbrush, you strain the paint to remove the BB's so they do not clog the paint tube or cup. You can also go to hobbico.com. They sell mainly RC plane parts, but they have a battery and AC operated paint shakers. They will hold Model Master, Floquil, and small Testor paint bottles with an adjustable strap.

Badger makes a nice little battery operated hand held mixer:

I also have the Robart paint shaker. This one is 110v, but they do offer a battery operated version too.

I got that same robart paint shaker at a flea market this past summer for a couple of bucks.

Man, I LOVE that thing!

I've got the same paint shaker, I was a bit  when I bought it, but have been very happy with it. For a paint stirer I just use a piece of sprue, or for paints that really need a good mixing (like most metal colors) I use my dremal (just remember to shut it off before taking the bit out of the jar or you will get modern art  )
