mrmike Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 My newest project, Revell's Challenger SRT8. The paint I am using will be Tamiya Light Metallic Blue TS-54 which seems close to the B5 Blue Pearl that Dodge uses today. I do not like the carbon fiber hood stripe that is used on this car. I am considering turning this into an R/T since I do really like the Defender stripes that where included with the AMT Challenger R/T. While removing the nose from the parts sprue, I nicked the side to the nose and had to fill it in with some Bondo. I decided to pin the mirrors to the body so I drilled some holes in the mirrors and the mounting pads and inserted some short pieces of round styrene rod into the mirrors. This should provide a strong mount for the mirrors. I test fitted the hood and found that it sticks up in the back by the cowl. I elongated the slots in the cowl slightly and sanded the front of the underside of the hood and now it fits flush. More to come.....
Ken Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 (edited) I just bought this same kit last week. Trying to put it together as a suprise for the wife. Everytime she watches NCIS LA she talks about the car. I just have my engine painted and started. I will be watching this thread for some hints and tips. I didn't notice the rear of the hood sticking up. I will have to check mine when I get home. I also thought about doing the same thing with the mirrors. I am gonna have to start my own thread so we can compare. Edited February 25, 2010 by Ken
Railfreak78 Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 A friend of mine bought a challenger ( not this one ) and the engine is molded in. Does this kit actually have an engine to put together?
Ken Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Yup, it does. It is pretty decent too. I will effort some snaps of it tonight or this weekend and then start my thead so as to not clutter up this one.
Jon Cole Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 A friend of mine bought a challenger ( not this one ) and the engine is molded in. Does this kit actually have an engine to put together? The AMT kits (both the 2008 & 2009) are "promo style", and therefore have "molded in" detail. The Revell kit, on the other hand, is a full detail kit.
mrmike Posted February 28, 2010 Author Posted February 28, 2010 (edited) I built the AMT Challenger RT last year and it is a easy kit to build with good detailing, but as it has been mentioned, it is a promo style kit but one that you should consider getting. For a full detail kit, the Revell kit is the way to go. Ahhh.....the joy of paint! Even the motor got some paint! I have an image of a Challenger SRT8 that I found and this color is pretty close to what I have. More to come..... Edited February 28, 2010 by mrmike
mrmike Posted March 5, 2010 Author Posted March 5, 2010 About 45 minutes of polishing with Meguirs Scratch X has produced this amazing shine! This is just paint, no clearcoat! This has got to be my best spray can paint job yet! The interior parts have been painted dark gray and when sufficiently dried, I'll coat them with semi gloss clear. More to come.....
mrmike Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 The motor is complete! And installed in the chassis. I sanded the center of the wheels and installed the Pegasus 245/45/18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires. I like these, really W-I-D-E! A mockup to check the stance revealed that the rear tires stuck out beyond the fenders. To get the tires inside the rear fenders, I disassembled the rear suspension and modified the rear shock mounts. I'll touchup the shock mounts with primer and reinstall the rear suspension and exhaust system. More to come.....
mrmike Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) I was able to finally spend some time at the bench this morning and make some progress on the Challenger. After doing some research, I noticed the the taillight lens is not completely clear and decided to scribe some lines on the inside of the lens. I have been masking and painting in steps so the model wouldn't be one massive ball of tape and to make things a little bit easier on me. The trim is mostly done and I still have to paint the side window trim and the front spoiler. I have some overspray cleanup to do. I had to partially disassemble the chassis to do some detail painting that I neglected to do and have since then reassembled the chassis. More to come..... Edited March 14, 2010 by mrmike
Space Cowboy Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Mike you have been busy and it shows. The engine looks sharp and all the little detail that you have done looks fantastic. Keep on building....
mrmike Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Thank you Bruce! More progress to show! I've gotten the trim and the front spoiler painted. I now need to use some BMF on the grille surround. The dash is done using a combination of the Revell and the leftover AMT decals. The side panels are done. More to come.....
Deckerz Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 It looks very nice and sleek, such a nice paint job from a rattle can. Im in love with that engine
mrmike Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Thank you Declan! The motor itself came out pretty good. I just wish i could add a little more detail to it.
shucky Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 That paint is beautiful! Nice job and keep up the good work.
mrmike Posted March 28, 2010 Author Posted March 28, 2010 Thanks Mike! I know it's been a while since I added anything to this WIP and I finally was able to sit down at the bench and work on the Challenger for a little while this afternoon. I finished the interior and installed it into the body and then joined the body to the chassis. I foiled the grille surround and it looks pretty good! The rear needs the taillight lens and the exhaust tips added. I must say that the paint on this car has to be the best I have ever done with a rattlecan! The more I look at it, the more I love it! And, to remind you all.....this is all paint. No clear coat!!!!! More to come.....
mrmike Posted March 28, 2010 Author Posted March 28, 2010 Thanks Billy and Gary! I installed the air box and intake tube and didn't like the looks of it. I prodeeded to get out the razor saw and removed the air box from the tube and install a K&N conical air filter from Scale Dreams painted with Humbrol Polish Crimson and The Detailer black wash. Now that adds a performance flare to the underhood area! After reading elsewhere about concerns of the taillight lens fitment, I added mine with some Elmers white glue and it fit perfectly. More to come.....
B_rad88 Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 wow, thats looks nice, and i really like the color.
mrmike Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 Thanks guys! I have finished my Challenger and it is posted in the Under Glass section. My thanks to all who took the time to look and to comment.
