MarkJ Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 This model depicts the car that Rory Calhoun (Mitch Cooper) drove in the 1960 Movie "Thunder in Carolina" It was filmed during the running of the 1959 Darlington "Southern 500". I saw this movie as a kid and always wanted to build it.
Railfreak78 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Nice looking old schooler! Seeing builds like these make me want to build one of the old convertibles.
tuffone20 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Wow that looks real nice!! I don't think I've ever seen that movie so I'll have to look for it and check it out.
MarkJ Posted March 1, 2010 Author Posted March 1, 2010 The car looks great so was the movie any good . Ricky, compared to the movies of today its pretty corny and it was no oscar winner by any means, but things were alot different back then. For a 9 year old boy in 1960 I was pretty impressed. It was the first I had ever seen of a stock car racer and I was hooked. If you can dig up a copy of it some where it is definitely worth a look.I don't know how old you are but if you have ever seen a rerun of "Gilligans Island" the captain of the boat was the Head mechanic for the car in the movie his name is Alan Hale. Also if you have ever seen the old tv show "Mister Ed", a show about a horse that could talk, The wife of the horses owner was the lead actress in "Thunder in Carolina" her name is Connie Hines.
MarkJ Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 Thanks guys. The movie should be re-released in DVD next week according to Amazon.com so if your interested you should check it out. The copy I have was copied from an old VHS tape to a super 8 tape and back to a VHS tape so needless to say I am going to be picking up the DVD version next week if I can find it locally. Thanks again.
John Truby Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 You captured the look of the real car perfectly. I love seeing all your stock car builds from long ago. John
