and then i ran into this master piece: http://cgi.ebay.com/1-24-PROFIL24-PORSCHE-550-COUPE-152-PANAMERICANA-1953_W0QQitemZ310203493873QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item483991adf1

There only seems to be one model of my favorite Porsche, but I wouldn't bother chasing one down. For some reason the 'tards at AMT, in their infinite wisdom, decided to tool up a 917/10, but relegated it to 1/32 scale. Can you imagine what could have been done with this car in 1/25 scale?

all right. I keep it on topic of both Porsches and Fantasy cars.

I have plans (in my head) to make a fictitious autobahn polizei car from a Porsche 959. All I have is the wheels mocked up. they are the spares from the enthusiast kits.

Mike, what exactly are you referring to when you refer to "Enthusiast kits"? The steelies for the 959 is a great idea! Where did you get the inserts?

i asume the fujimi porsche 911 enthusiast kits, and the inserts is the "spare wheel". but hey michael, wouldn't a porsche 356 steelies work, they just need to be widen some.

UMi did a resin 910/10 in 1/24. Guess it's time to start chasing huh

As long as we're on the topic of Porsches, (especially the 917!), what about the 917 K-81?

One of the more obscure Porsche race cars.

Here's my version of it. I started with a Heller and a lot of styrene and putty. I had a friend with an ALPS printer make the decals. Wheels and tires came out of parts box. I believe the car ran in Group 6 for the last year before the old numbered groups were eliminated. In the mid '80s I saw an ad for the car in The Robb Report. I think they wanted $350,000!

The kit you refer to is a Matchbox kit that AMT sold over here in their own box and with L&M markings. The Matchbox version comes with Martini markings. If I remember right the AMT came with both decals because when Matchbox shipped the moldings over they were bagged with the decals. It is a nice kit if you can get over the scale. A friend in my club (rpmmodelclub.com) built this kit with Brumos markings and it is very nice!

The UMI 917/10 is AWFUL! The master was sold to Formula Canada who did redo it and put it back out. It was definitely much better but still had a few issues. You may be able to find the Formula Canada kit easier. They were being sold on Ebay for a while for $75. by the maker.

Tamiya's 961 is very nice although curbside. Someone makes the decals for the Rothman's Lemans version. Strada Sports sells the decals and the Tamiya 961 is easy to find. The Tamiya kit comes with just plain markings for an earlier race(Daytona?) No need to deal with the awful zinc blob or the Gunze kit which has "issues".

I had a 1996 911 c4 in my shop bay the other day for a general check over. Nice car but too small for my big feet just a little cramped by the clutch pedal. I've a few Porsche in my bay at work the last two years, would not mind owning one someday. I was considering a 944 before purchasing my truck.

cool, and i have been thinking of getting a 944 turbo, or the 944 DOHC (and adding a turbo) or a 968 (adding a turbo), for my first porsche...... but i dunno, 964's are becoming cheaper recently (like i can get one right now, lol) i seen a decent one go for $13,000(EST), but i can only wish right now...... Andy, Great Job on the 917/81!!

AMT released both versions of the 917/10 with #2022 for the Martini Car and 2050 for the L&M Penskey/Donohue/Follmer Car which had both decal sheets included in the one I have.

You'll get no argument as to the Kit condition, but it is better than a few of other UMi's I have. At too Formula Canada I REALLY wish he'd return to making kits as he had several others I'd like to get.

The Porsche I'd like to find would be a 908/2 to recreate the Dean CanAm Car.

Yes, the Enthusiast kits were the 200+ piece kits from Fujimi. The Spare wheel that goes up front under the "bonnet" is a steel wheel.

I never tried the 356 Steel wheel, but I assume that the same thing could be done with a different, correct sized sleeve.

Yes, I have enough steelies to make an entire set (actually have seven, but who's counting???)

As far as width goes, since I'm sleeving these, the width of the sleeve determines the actual width of the wheel. I can also set my own backspacing, if I decide the rears need to look "Wider".

on a different note, a few years back, i saw in a car magazine someone was making a 904 replica w/ modern amenities & LT-1 power, but for the life of me, I cannot remember who it was or were. I know the replica was yellow & had nice 5-spoke wheels. Anyone have a clue?

here's a pic of a 904 for reference:

Porsche-904-GTS_1.jpg

Thunder did a really nice replica I seen one with yellow wheels but it had a 911 motor in it.

I'll have to look through my old R&T (I'm pretty sure it was Road & Track) & see if i can find any info.

it was within the last 9 years, because i bought the Monogram 904 kit based on building that car. ( that 904 was my first purchase from Ebay)

well i can get pics of the 356 steelies for you, and wow, i have a monogram 904 kit, it looks very complexblink.gif

That sure looks like the bugger. Thanks for the link. Yea I have the body and one tree with the interior floor pan and wheels and some stuff. I'll have to see what I can do with it.

I am told that this car finished 2nd @ LeMans in 1970. It is currently in the Simeone Museum in Philadelphia.

The Curator also said it was driven at one time by Pedro Rodriguez, and was in Gulf colors at one time as well.

Here's some more views.

Yeah it was sold for $1.5m and purchased from Symbolic Motor Cars in Ca

It is said to be very originally but in need of restoration.

And yes it did finish second.

I don't foresee any restorations here. The Doc likes to keep his stuff as original and un-restored as possible. He likes them to be as close to the way they raced as they can be.
