studioman3 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 A little off topic, I ran across a couple old Macks the other day. any idea what this is on the fifth wheel? Just curious Tim
rronning84 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Looks like a very adjustable hight 5th wheel to me. Not sure what it is needed for though.
highway Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 I would say an adjustable fifth wheel, too. Even though I've never see anything like it , I have seen similar fifth wheel plates on "yard jockies" or "yard dogs", it is an air actuated fifth wheel that will release the trailer at a push of a button.
rronning84 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 After looking at it more I agree that it is probably used for dumping trailers as it looks like it will lift rather high.
cargostar Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 House moving maybe? Hooking up and disconnecting to get the house off of the cribbing?
mackinac359 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 I've seen these before - it raises the 5th wheel. Tim

Jim B Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Ok, now that we know what it is, who's going to build one?
studioman3 Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Ok, now that we know what it is, who's going to build one? lol I'll prolly have to get more pics of it then. The black and red Mack was for sale by the way, $3000 OBO, would be fun to restore. Tim
Scott S Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 That is a hi lift unit for dumping trailers that are not dump trailers, ie Box type vans, usualy loaded w chips, bark ect. they were popular before the dump platforms came into use. still see smaller yard useing them here in the east. Scott
lvfd221 Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 HI guys, If you find the book. Semi-trucks of the 1950s by Ron Adems it shows a picture if the lift in action. Page #9 top photo. Hope that this helps. I may have to try to build one of these my self. Rex
daniel gailloux Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Hello Rex Here is a Pacific truck with the fith wheel set up as the picture you have taken. It is from Hanks truck picture my reference for trucks. My link My link If you look in Hanks truck picture you should be able to find a picture with a raised trailer. Hope this helps.
