I would say an adjustable fifth wheel, too. Even though I've never see anything like it , I have seen similar fifth wheel plates on "yard jockies" or "yard dogs", it is an air actuated fifth wheel that will release the trailer at a push of a button.

I've seen these before - it raises the 5th wheel.

What, like a yard dog?

Ok, now that we know what it is, who's going to build one?

lol I'll prolly have to get more pics of it then.

The black and red Mack was for sale by the way, $3000 OBO, would be fun to restore.

That is a hi lift unit for dumping trailers that are not dump trailers, ie Box type vans, usualy loaded w chips, bark ect. they were popular before the dump platforms came into use. still see smaller yard useing them here in the east.

HI guys, If you find the book. Semi-trucks of the 1950s by Ron Adems it shows a picture if the lift in action. Page #9 top photo.

Hope that this helps. I may have to try to build one of these my self.

If you look in Hanks truck picture you should be able to find a picture with a raised trailer.

Hope this helps. Best regards Daniel Gailloux
