I have a lot of work to do, but at least I have figured out the chassis and front/rear suspension. This is being built from 3 kits and a parts box. LOL...not at the standards of most of the guys here, but I thought you'd like to see an idea for cool old car.

Chrome will have some brass highlights. Chevy engine.

Truck frame as starter...this will be an "early days" funny car.

...more pics as the chassis progresses. Nascar front end, pieces parts rear end, scratch built cockpit. By far my most ambitious build ever!

I have wanted to build one of those for a while. The front end styling is so wacky! Confused about the front chassis though. Is it a funny car with a Nascar front clip?

1st draft..yes. I had a pick up truck frame donated at the North Coast meeting, used the front clip from a Nascar, and some of the rear end pieces as well. The truck frame had to be narrowed by near half. I am still learning how to fill those lines where I cut and reattached frame parts. The frame was almost perfect in length. (The Edsel is very long!)

My intention is to build what I'd describe as low budget early daya funny car. LOL...in reality, I just don't have the heart to piece out any of the few actual drag cars we have in stock. I am using 3 junkyard kits and some pieces from parts boxes. The Edsel, a 57 Chevy, and a 90's Nascar.

"No complete kit has been harmed in the making of this 'funny' car."

The front end is very cool on the Edsel. Notice I added a spoiler to the front and some ground effects side panels. (Extended rocker panels).

I'll have pics soon...

I have most of the chassis figured out. Man, scratch build/parts box building is time consuming. LOL...just finding the parts or pieces to use takes me forever. (NOTE to self: get an organizer for all these parts).

As you can see the frame and cockpit have been roughly constructed. I need to add several parts (steering, shocks, etc.) but the main idea seems to be working. I have a lot of filing and filler to go...but I am reasonably happy with the construction.

By the way...lets call this thread "The Rookie's Blog: Watch the ol' guy learn as he goes."

The nascar front clip went together OK, but I may try again. I put the spindles on backwards (they looked the same at first glance) so I had to alter the rotors to have the brake cylinders up rather than down B). Secondly, I didn't see to put the little wheel adaptor on as I was putting the spindles on, they were suppose to stick out through the rotor...but instead they are still on the tree. DOH! Now I have to come up with a way to attach my tires/wheels. Just one of those OOPS moments.

I do like the way the car sits. I have been playing with the body/filler/paint. I had already begun the proccess when I ran across 2 great tutorials on paint. (Next time). I had to deal with what I started. The filler I used (NMD White Putty) was not very good. I could see the lines I was filling over and over and over. Sand fill sand fill sand fill...yikes! I finally got it, but I read about some other methods to fill and why some paints effect the filler as well. Again, next time! Mainly I was filling the hood lines and door lines as I wanted to 1 pc. body look of fiberglass cars.

This car was painted with Gloss Black paint for plastic. No primer needed (says the can).

It actually worked OK. I could sand and see the bad spots, fill and simply repaint. Once I got it to my liking, I sprayed it again with Tamiya Gray Pearl. The end result is a gloss black with a little metal flake finish. I like it fine.

Well that's it for now. I'll share more head aches as I go. LOL.

By the way, the engine I am using is for fit only. I may actually use this engine, but I do plan to fully detail an engine later in the build (using the tutorials I find here).
