I have some model parts that I either have to replace with new resin repop parts or else send them away and have them rechromed. Any suggestions as to who is reliable and honest and what does it cost to have parts rechromed? I know it will depend on the size of the part but does anyone have any input on this based on actual experience? I looked at Chrome Tech's webpage but there is no price guide to indicate what the costs are. Are there any other platers who you would recommend? :)

There's a fella by the name of Dale Horner up the road from me that does chrome plating, and he's quite good rivaling Chrome Tech.

It's Little Motor Kar Company, and years ago I had some parts sent to him to be replated, and they came back absolutely perfect. He has no website, but here's his address...................

Little Motor Kar Co.

203 Linda Lane

Reading, PA 19606

(610) 779-1462

Also, he has email, you can contact him here.

His prices start at $20 for a 6" X 8" rack, but you'll have to contact him for any other particulars.

John,

What prep work did you do and what did Dale do before the plating?

Steve

Steve,

I stripped the old plating off with Easy-Off Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner (the yellow can) then cleaned up the flash and mold lines (a relatively easy task on these parts) and made sure everything fit the way I wanted. Then I polished out any file or sanding marks to give the parts a nice shine in bare plastic – the shinier the plastic the smoother the chrome. Careful prep is everything to ensure the best result. Using high-temp silicone I mounted the Fury parts along with a bunch of other bumpers on a 6 x 8 rack made out of coat hangar wire. Hope that helps.

hi John, Looks like pretty good work to me and as I painted real cars for fifteen years, I understand fully the concept of "it's all in the prep work". Guys - what are your views on rechroming as opposed to buying repop resin parts that are chromed?

That can be subjective as not all chrome parts are made equally. I won't name names---------but I've gotten repopped plated parts from a certain manufacturer that could have stood a good cleanup. Others were better than new as the mold lines, flash, etc, were taken care of.

I've also found the resin plated stuff is harder to get the chrome off than the kit parts..........or maybe I wasn't using the right product that day. :D
