Hi!

I am looking for a readily available model kit with a Ford 390 engine in it in 1/25th scale. It is for a 68 Fastback I am planning (like a guy in my high school had in 1971).

Thanks for any and all help!

Curt, I'm not 100% certain, but you can check RC's (AMT) '67 Mustang GT. I think that may have a 390 in it.

I have the kit but it's under a ton of boxes so I don't have it readily available..

I've seen some motors built up, and it looks pretty good!

bills absolutely right; i used that engine to replace the plastic lump in the 70 ford police car. it is an excellent fe representation. also used in the 67 comet gt and fairlane gt/gta kits!

Several! Perhaps two of the nicest ones out there are in the AMT/Ertl '62 Thunderbird convertible kit, and don't discount the old AMT/Lindberg '34 Ford pickup either! That kit has a very nicely done 390 with triple carbs, stock aircleaner, and stock appearing exhaust manifolds to boot.

YEP; the t-bird comes with fuel lines too! had forgotten that.... mix and match to find some chrome "thunderbird" valve covers... or the nice "mercury" high pent-roof chrome ones in the current AMT 66 mercury kit.

but for the planned '68 fastback i'd go with the fairlane or comet versions to get the correct hipo exhausts, then mix and match for intake options.

(ooops) sorry steve! i was recalling the "bullitt" i built from the combination of those kits.... and i was SURE i was recalling correctly (so much for THAT...) and i apologize!

where can i get a 1/25 steve mcqueen/frank bullitt to put in the car now?

There's a diecast Bullitt 67 Mustang, but it's 1/18 and it has a 289. Yu could use tha engines from tha Revell-Monogram Mysterion ( they are 406s, but that's internal outside is tha same and I think AMT/Ertl's 32 Vicky is a 406 also....yu can also find tha same engine in AMT/Ertl's 1932 Phaeton and 1932 Ford Tudor Sedan kits from 1972, (these have a six-barrel carb setup and really neat over tha frame headers.

As an aside you could use just about any 427 also, as essentially

they look the same externally. The ones in the 66 Fairlane and 67

Comet kits are about the best ones out there.

Wouldn't the engines in the '60 Starliner kits pass visually for a 390?

Yes they would  I forgot about that one as it is an FE also some Tbird kits also had them and really other than bolt heads near the bottom of the block and an oil passage cast on the side of a 427 side oiler all FE Ford engines look essentially alike and there is quite a list: all are cu.in. 332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 391, 406, 410, 427 and the 428.

HTH :D:D

P.S. The Revell Mysterion has two FE "406" engines!!!

Don't use tha 428, it wasn't a Ford-Edsel block, completely different engine.

an what's a 410? Is that a truck block? Or an aftermarket casting?

I'm using tha 352 in a '60 Ford, mid-60s short-track Late Model as a 427, not a side-oiler.

But, in reality, even tha 427 conventional Ford block is not a true FE.

Actuall the 428 is an FE. You may be confusing it with the 429

which is from the "385" series. The 428 Cobra Jet was a 428

P/I engine with 427 low-riser heads and a different cam also

a fair number of the "street" version "427 Cobras came with

Shelby modified 428 P/I engines as the CJ wasn't developed

yet in 1965-66. And yes not all 427's were side oilers but

they had the largest bore of all FE engines hence the heads

wouldn't work on the other blocks without notching the cylinders

(not recommended also when the 427 production was kaput, factory replacement blocks were punched out 391 heavy truck blocks as

they had thicker cylinder walls and the 390, 391, 406 and 427 all share the same stroke the only thing is the 390 and 406 had a cast crank, also of note some late 406's also had the crossbolt mains as all 427's do.

The 410 was available only in the Mercury line for 66 and 67.

Please don't take offense about my spouting off about the FE

but I have worked on FE's for nearly 30yrs hence my fanatical

ranting about them. I have also included a link to help

everyone understand the "poor old boat anchor" which is also

my favorite Ford engine family of all time :):D:D

Revell did a diecast kit of the Bullitt Mustang in 1/25 or 1/24.

Oh I never take offense Tim, I'm tha first to admit that I have over 50 yrs of memories crammed in between my ears, and sometimes they get very confused. My specialty was tha First On Race Day - Y-block. Fords made so many different speed parts for that engine, and they were all in tha junk yards. :D

I did bore out a '58 T-bird 352 to 390 and put it ina '56 Ford Customline 2dr 6cyl. body. Worked on and around 427's in Late Models in tha mid 60s, mostly in 60 Ford bodies. Is where my memories on tha 427 and 428 came from.

My brother has a Nascar 429 SOHC he wants to put in my 65 Falcon, what a monstrous amount of work...but he's NUTS, ex-outlaw biker in NC stock car country....

Thanks!

That Falcon combo sounds like a "HAIRY" ride and if you go with a

top loader the pucker factor is way high!!

I kow how you feel about the Y block I was at a metal scrapyard

about 20 yrs ago it was a Y block with black valve covers which generally indicate a 312 Interceptor thought I had found a piece of gold until

I turned it over and there was a hole in the side of the block you

could stick your fist through. Any way my cousin bought it for about

20 bucks and sold the heads w/covers, intake and cam for 100 bucks

and never told me thank you telling him about it !!!

Speaking of 312s, I got one really cheap out of a 57 Ford sedan, crushed rear end..hehe junk guy thought it was just a 292...was all I could do to keep from yelling yeeehawww on tha way out tha gate.

Put it ina 56 ford 2 dr hdtop with my favorite Ford-o-matic....air-cooled automatic trans, aluminum bellhousing and tailshaft. I kept that motor for years.....they had special ratio rocker arms to increase tha valves opening time. :D

Hi All,

Barry Beacham was very gracious and sent me a nice 390 with hipo intake and I greatly appreciated it!!

Everyone was very helpful! I sent Barry a set of my 57 Chevy decals for his project and hope he finds them useful.

Thanks again everyone!!
