Matt, your going about it the right way. In order to get the fuselage seam halves sealed and filled for proper painting you have to complete the cockpit and install it first. One trick I learned from some great airplane builders is to fill the cockpit with moist tissue to use as a masking when you are finally ready for paint. After you finish your paint you simply pull it out and clean up any excess tissue residue.

Mine will be ready for completion this coming weekend.

Thanks for the advice. I was planning on masking the canopy, but since the detail where the ribbing around the canopy is, well, nonexistant, that idea flew (haha, no pun intended  ) out the window. I will definitely have to give the moist tissue a try.

Ok, I'm a gluten for punishment, and I still haven't got the Spitfire in primer yet, and with a little more than a week left, I started a second build! This is my choice for the second, a nice classic P-51D.

HPIM2683.jpg

This was what I originally wanted to build, but I couldn't find anything less than a $40 kit, so I settled with the Spitfire. Then I found this one at Michael's for about $8 with my 40% off coupon! Anyway, I started on the wings tonight.

HPIM2684.jpg

I started getting rid of the gun ports on the left wing.

HPIM2685.jpg

I still have the right wing to finish.

HPIM2686.jpg

I'm hoping to have primer on the Spitfire tomorrow, and maybe the Mustang, too!

Well, it's update time again, and I did get the Spitfire in primer today, even though you really can't tell in the picture since it was molded in more or less primer gray, too!

HPIM2688.jpg

I also got more finished on the Mustang, the gun ports are gone and the wing is ready to go. I also started painting the interior. Here's a quick mock up of the Stang.

HPIM2689.jpg

This is a little teaser of the interior color, this is going to be a full race paint job, not just a fancy paint job over a more or less stock plane like the Spitfire with it's green interior. The racing fans among us might even be able to guess the final paint job from the interior color.

Those are looking good Matthew! Quite ambitious with only a WEEK to go!

Yep, Jeff, and I was sweating bullets thinking neither would be done! I was having issues either with the weather, since I have to paint outside, or the paints jobs themselves!

Anyway, I have made some great progress and these will be finished by tomorrow! I still have to finish minor details like the landing gear and add the props, but I have the paint and decals finished. Here are how they stand now, and just in case anyone sees the decal carrier on the Spitfire, these decals were from a kit that was about 20 years old!

If you couldn't tell, Dale Earnhardt was (and still is) my favorite NASCAR driver. These are a "what if" if he was a race pilot instead. I'm hoping that the chance of thunderstorms the weatherman is calling for in my area tomorrow at least hold off until I get my outdoor pics taken!

Tomorrow is the end of Summer and the end of this build off. After working 10 hour days I just didn't have the energy to finish my entry. ;)

However looks like we might have at least a few entrys to judge.

Keep building guys!

I'm sorry to hear that, Jairus. ;)

I was wondering, too, after I get my outdoor finished pics taken tomorrow, do I post them here or will there be a new thread for the finished models?

Same here, but 12-14 hour days.

If you want to extend the deadline, I'm sure no one would object.

Yes please, that would be helpful ;)

Those look great Matthew!!! I especially like the P-51!

Yeah, Jairus, if you want to extend it some, no objections here.

I don't have the long days like you guys, I wish I did because I'm on the oppisite side of the fence, I'm unemployed. ;) My 10-14 hour days are here on the forum or at the model desk, but I miss my 50-60 hour weeks I had when I was working.

Well, between the weatherman being right and a storm moving through the area right in the middle of my wheels up photo shoot and the wind twisting and turning the planes so badly I was getting airsick standing on the ground, I managed to get my 3 final build shots for both entries. I will post each plane in separate posts, that way if there will be a new thread for the completed builds, it will be easy for me to just copy and paste them. This has been a fun build and out of my normal comfort zone, not to mention it's also my first community build I have finished. I still have many more I've signed up for needing to be finished now! Anyway, enough chatter, here's a teaser pic of both sitting on the runway, actually my front sidewalk. :D

The motion has been seconded.

I guess we don't need a vote since there are still two other (besides me) builders who have not posted lately.

I guess another 15 days wouldn't hurt. Sorry Matthew. You and Wayne seem to be the only ones able to finish with-in a deadline.

(Maybe I can even finish now?)

There's nothing to be sorry about, Jairus. I'm glad to see you extend it, I might even be able to take some more pics with the wonderful WV fall colors in the background. :)

Okay, hearing no dissention regarding the extension...

Update:

Spent 2 hours last night on the German FW 190 entry. I think that in another couple of hours I may be ready to begin painting. Pictures later.

After another two hours spent last night.... this is as far as I am.

The body is now one piece for the first time!

P1010093-vi.jpg

Canopy has been glued together and sanded smooth. This will act as the mold for a vac-formed piece, to be painted and detailed to look more like its "sport plane" derived.

P1010091-vi.jpg

Gear down shot required some new thinner doors created. The original thick cast doors will be stuck in place for pictures only.

Almost there...

Matt your entries look great. I love the outdoor photos that you took. Looks very real. Jairus, thanks for extending the deadline. I'm still working on the base and the pylon before I can call this one complete. I should have a finished product by this coming Wednesday.

Thank you, even though I wish the fishing line wasn't as noticable in a few.
