DRG Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 I am sorry to bother ya all with this but what are you referring to when you say the Purple Pond? I have one I want to rebuild but am unsure of how to strip it. Will it remove or loosen the glue? Thank you for any and all information.
Steve Keck Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 (edited) The Purple Pond is Castrol Super Clean. There is a similar one at wally world IIRC. Someone will correct me. Here's a similar discussion: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=32298 I don't believe it will loosen the glue. Someone will correct me. There is a technique where you dip the model in water then freeze it. Sort of like styrene errosion. Maybe someone can expand on the technique. Edited July 26, 2010 by Steve Keck
george 53 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Don, if you us either of those cleaners, WEAR GLOVES!!!! This stuff IS MEAN! and it WILL eat the skin off your hands if you let it set on it for any length of time!!! I'm just warnin you caz it happened to me, and it took about a month for the skin on my hands was back to normal. But it WILL strip just about any paint you put in it!!!
DRG Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 Thank's to each of you, you have been a big help, Thank you all.
MikeMc Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 "Purple Pond" is also generic for "stripping tank"......DOT 3 brake fluid, 91% isopropol alcohol are what I use on lacquer.
Clay Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 The stuff at Wal-Mart is called Super Clean. It works great just don't leave it in there for a long period of time. It will dry into a crispy mess. It's also evironmentally friendly, meaning you can pour it into the sewer and it won't hurt anything.
The Modeling Hermit Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 My purple pond is brake fluid. My glue removal is a dip in water and a trip to the freezer. Both of these are simplified, but you get the drift.
Greg Cullinan Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 Onr thing about Super Clean I just figured out is that it loses it power after some time. I pour the gallon into a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. I used my first bucket of purple for a year and about 20 plus stripped bodies. Lately it was taking a lot of soaking and elbow grease to strip a body. I changed it recently and it seems more potent when new.
