Railfreak78 Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 I certainly do not need another project going on before I finish one but I think we are all guilty of it. My next project is this big 1:8 scale Harely. It has a 1976 copyright on the box and I thought it was a good deal at $30. I want to try to get some extra detail into it as I go but it will be police not custom. The only bad thing so far is that one chrome bracket is faded bad so I did a wash on the engine and it took the chrome off so I will be painting it to look aluminum casting instead with the black insets on the engine fins. More to come and Enjoy!
DrewCfromSC Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Nice kit! Not too many other motorcycle modelers ive found here but now you and I know their are 2 of us! Oh and i build cars, trucks too! Thanks for sharing. Let me know if you find any reasin or detail parts, supplies. Im not having much luck here. Drew C. from S.C.
Railfreak78 Posted August 24, 2010 Author Posted August 24, 2010 Hey Drew! There is a small amount of us out there. Here are couple of my beater restore projects. I build them as a teen and now trying to fix them. I'm also restoring ( Very slowly from lack of money thanks to this hobby ) a 1980 Yamaha XJ650 for my first bike.
DrewCfromSC Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Very cool stuff. I know what you mean by lack of money! We just bought our house a couple of months ago and untill we sell our old house im pretty cash poor. LA street chopper? Check out my photography website sometime. www.ridebyshootings.com I shoot bikers! Drew C. from S.C.
whale392 Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 (edited) Brian, that's an old Flatside Shovel engine you got there (1966-69)! Are you planning a hardtail chop for it or keep it as an Electra-Glide? As for real project bikes, I have my 1956 Harley FL and a 1971 Suzuki T500R. Nevermind the chop question, I just re-read your initial post. If you want some detail ideas for this, let me know. I will try to help as best as I can. Edited August 24, 2010 by whale392
Agent G Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 I built this a couple of times. If you are going for a police motor I have references. G
Harry P. Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Not too many other motorcycle modelers ive found here but now you and I know their are 2 of us! I'm one too!

One of my dearest friends is VP of a Female joint chapter. I don't have mine going yet or I'd consider joining but until that happens I'm only a visitor Thanks for sharing the site it looks cool and I ALWAYS preach to look out for riders.
Railfreak78 Posted August 25, 2010 Author Posted August 25, 2010 Bradley and Wayne I could use reference pics. Mainly engine detail as most of the Google images are to far away and cover the whole bike. Fork and shocks would be cool too. I have this in Moch up right now and I am not happy with the fork details. I know HD is different from my Yamaha but there is no fork or shock detail in this kit.
Railfreak78 Posted August 25, 2010 Author Posted August 25, 2010 I'm one too! All of yours are beautiful but wow I love these 2. I want so bad to do something else with this but I need it for a club meet. I may follow your perfect lead of the blue and white and make something similar with the junker touring bike I have. I already have real leather for it too.
Railfreak78 Posted August 25, 2010 Author Posted August 25, 2010 I got this far into one...then the frustration of no 2 parts fitting as designed finally won out.
charlie8575 Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Interesting project, Brian. I'll have an eye on this. Harry- really nice to see some of your builds, and they're well-done. Does anyone know of any bikes in 1/24-25? Generally- are there any Indians out there? Charlie Larkin
Railfreak78 Posted August 25, 2010 Author Posted August 25, 2010 So this kit has a lot of excess plastic on the parts and a few fitment issues like the 2 piece fork pieces being different lengths and a few other parts not wanting to go together but the frame is good thankfully. Here it's starting to look like a nakie bike. I still have certain parts not glued so I can do detail painting and such. Thanks for everyones comments and help. Oh and here is a tip for you guys that I do with painting. If a part has a side you can't see like the bottom of this engine, I drill 2 tiny holes and stick wire to hold it for paint. Then stick it in a foam block to dry I did this one to look aluminum and the pics do not show it but I was able to add a bit more metallic into the silver to achieve my desired finish. Enjoy!

Does anyone know of any bikes in 1/24-25? Generally- are there any Indians out there? Charlie Larkin I don't know if you have a michaels were you are but they have chopper kits in 1/24 or 1/25. They only carry 2 and there are 4 in a set that I think ( I could be wrong ) are from Revell. They each have some different custom parts and you can swap them with each kit. I want to get a few of them myself.
John Teresi Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Very nice start.......man do I love bikes........and WOW!!!!! .......I go to give a big round of applause for Harry`s BEAUTIFUL builds......I never knew he was into bikes too!.........AWESOME builds Harry
Agent G Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 As far as the forks and shocks go the lits are pretty good representations of the period pieces. The visible portions of the forks are just what you see in the kit.The lower is a simple chrome tapered shaft the telescopes into a chrome sleeve. The rear shocks have no visible springs and look for all the orld like an auto shock. Remember, this version of the bike was produced not long after rear suspension was introduced. Let me get my refs together. G
whale392 Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 As for current 1/24th-1/25th Harleys........find the 2001 release of the Harley Truck, trailer, and FLDWG bike. Also, Maisto die-cast has 6 series' of 1/24th scale die-cast Harleys of quite a few different years. With work, the Maistos can be really cool! The old Revell 'Cherry Bomb' kit had a Flatside Shovel Chopper in it.
Agent G Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 My books and photos won't scan that well so here's a few shots from the interweb. For discussion purposes only, I give you some Harley's. The all white bike is a '68 and the blue/white Glide is a '69. The alternator made it's appearence shortly thereafter so these are representative of the model you are building. G
old-hermit Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Not too many other motorcycle modelers ive found here I've built a few too and glad to see more people doing it... http://public.fotki.com/old-hermits-garage/motorcycles/18-scale/ Don't laugh to hard ... I don't dust !!!!! That CHP bike is perfect fodder for building old style chops too. You can modify the frame to a rigid fairly easily ... and it's real easy to extend the glide front end ... .
