Kaleb Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 I have a chance to get a 8.8 setup from a 93 mustang. I have an 02 and needing the 5 lug conversion the cheapest setup i found was 289. Is there another way that I could do this?
Kaleb Posted August 26, 2010 Author Posted August 26, 2010 true, Ive also have heard that the axles I have will work as well. I know the 94-98 housing is wider than the fox and my body style. Does anyone know about that?
whale392 Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Your information is incorrect. The 8.8" rear axle housing is the same width from 1986-1998, it is the axles themselves that are different lengths but will interchange as long as you change the corresponding brake backing plates. Marks' info on Ranger/Aerostar Axles is correct, they are Fox length and you will have to source Ranger drums........all other aspects are the same brake-wise. Disc axles from the Lincoln MKVII(and its' LSC variant), SVO Mustang, and 1994-98 Mustang are all 3/4" longer than the FOX units, but will interchange along with the brake backing plates. Be warned though, the disc diameter is different between the cars and calipers varied so you will need to grab the corresponding discs/calipers. 1999-2004 housings are wider, along with the axles being 3" longer per side. If you want any more info, PM me. I could fill a thread with just what I have, or go over to foureyedpride.com and into their wheels/tires/brakes section and surf till your mouse dies.
whale392 Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Mark, the 94-98 axles do have ABS tone wheels, but so do the later Lincoln MKVII axles. The brake backing plate (the bracket that the caliper bolts to) was modified to hold the ABS pick-up sensor. As to axle interchangability, as I mentioned earlier the 1994-98 axles will work in the 1986-93 housings as well. Also of note, the 7.5" rear uses the same 4 bolt attachment points and axle dimensions as the pre-99 8.8" rears, so you can swap any 7.5" alxe into an 8.8" rear as well. Even the 9" axles have the same 28 spline shape/diameter as the 7.5"/8.8"...but have different ends. A lot of us road-race guys will run the 9" axles in our 8.8" housings after we modify our axle tube ends for the 9" press-fit bearing retainer (C-Clip eliminators are illegal in most classes of sanctioned racing). Now, with a carrier change, you can run the later 33 spline axles in the earlier housings as well.
george 53 Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 Will this stuff swap in styrene as well??? I was just gonna say put some 5 bolt wheels on it, after all, it's only plastic. But you guys were talkin REAL,so, nevermind.
Kaleb Posted August 27, 2010 Author Posted August 27, 2010 Lol and I only wanted to know about the rear end of the drivetrain not the front. Well I have options...rebuild my 7.5 or buy an 8.8 with 3.73 race ready and when I get up to 400 HP ill have a rearend ready
whale392 Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 Build your 8.8" to handle anything. I have the info (if you want it) to build an 8.8" up to handle 1,000hp or go blisteringly fast around a corner.
