DrewCfromSC Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 (edited) Hello all, picked up a reissue Deora kit at a yard sale today. On the way home my wife says it would be cool to paint it like a 1960s Hot Wheels car. Well I found a place online that sells repro spectraflame color paints. 1/2 oz bottle in 15 orignal colors. Anyone used these paints and have any input? Good or bad? How many would be needed to airbrush a 1/25 scale kit? Drew C. from S.C. Edited August 29, 2010 by zwitterman
Monty Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Drew, your wife had an excellent idea regarding painting the Deora in Spectraflame. As far as quantities go, I'd think a 1/2 ouce bottle would be more than plenty for any 1/24 or 1/25 scale kit. IIRC, these colors were kind of a candy paint; did they give you any recommendations for a base? Gold? Silver? Are these paints lacquers, enamels or acrylics? I'm sure there are others on here who'd be interested in learning about these paints, and I could probably spare you the effort of answering most of these questions if you wouldn't mind giving us a link to your provider.

Monty Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Thanks! Looks like your Deora will need some kind of gold or silver base, as these paints were apparently meant to work over Hot Wheels' polished stampings. Also, the instructions indicate you'll need to build the paint up in light, multiple coats, so it might not hurt to have an extra bottle of paint available. I'm hoping someone who has used these on styrene will pop in and clarify a few things for us.
Guest Gramps-xrds Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 According to their site, that paint is urethane base so it should go over just about anything.

It has been a couple of years since my last candy paint job. Well that was a motorcycle so now just gotta think small! Should not be a problem at all. Making an order soon. Might just try the 10 pack deal. Thanks for your reply! Drew C. from S.C.
Tonioseven Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 I'm gonna order a bottle and see how it comes out.
Tonioseven Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Here's what was in my mailbox this afternoon... I'll provides updates of the results as I get them completed.
DrewCfromSC Posted September 20, 2010 Author Posted September 20, 2010 I still have not orderd any. Let us know how you like it, sprays, ect. Maybe a mini review of sorts. Drew C from S.C.
Scalefinishes Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 I just seen this thread, my apologies for coming in so late. That is a screaming good deal for those colors. I asked about the Spectraflame paints at my paint store, and was quoted (sitting down?) $500 for a quart of antifreeze green. Then they wanted almost as much for the silver base that you use under it. And they will not sell those colors in anything less than a quart. Thank you for posting the link, this is great. Jameston
