935k3 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Apparently the beautiful new Ferrari Italia 458 has a "minor" problem. Story at this link Flaming Ferraris
Agent G Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Ferrari is a name however,"ferrare" roughly translates as "horsepower". Pronunciation wise they are nearly identical. Thus Enzo's use of a cavallo, or horse. So sayeth my universal translator, i.e. my 23 year old son. The big dummy paid attention in that Jesuit school. On topic, how in the heck do you design a high end car such as this with flammable heat shields?? G
Harry P. Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Ferrari is a name however,"ferrare" roughly translates as "horsepower". I know. It was a joke. Oh well... I'm no Jay Leno, I guess...

Railfreak78 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I have mixed feelings on this. I love certain Ferrari and Lambo models and hate to see it. On the flip side, If you have the money to own one it's really not a big loss since you have the money for insurance.... full coverage.... right? So.. Bingo... New car?
Agent G Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I know. It was a joke. Oh well... I'm no Jay Leno, I guess... So was my reply! We need a tounge in cheek smiley. :') G
Jon Cole Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Meh. Any rich fool can drive an exotic. But only a select few get to boast that their exotic went up in flames! "EH! I wasa gonna sell it off anyhow!" Next one was alledgedly a 360 Modena! Fried exotic... the new status symbol!

G The Prancing Horse(Cavalinno Rampante)emblem was on Italy's top fighter ace's aircraft of WW 1, Count Francesco Baracca. He was killed by ground fire while on a low level strafing run.Years later his Mother presented the emblem to Enzo Ferrari for use on his road and racing cars. Both Families were from the same area of Italy(Emilio Romanga).Btw,those images of the burning Ferraris are sure hard to take for this Tifoso.
Agent G Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Btw,those images of the burning Ferraris are sure hard to take for this Tifoso. Yes they are. It reminds me of the time my neighbor got to dorking around and tossed his Ducati 916 down the street. I just went inside. G
Railfreak78 Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 On a serious note... What makes these cars do this? It's always a problem with the exotics and I never knew why?

On the 458's it's the adhesive that holds the heat shielding in place. It gives way and then it is exposed to the high temperatures. Ferrari is recalling and replacing the adhesive with mechanical(bolts?)fasteners.I will have to some research to see if this is the first time Ferrari had to recall one of their models.
