OPEC thanks you!
sjordan2 Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 My '93 Corvette had an MPG calculator, and the typical mileage around town was 15 MPG. Depending on how I used the 6-speed transmission, mileage varied from 7 MPG (accelerator on the floor) to 100 MPG while coasting. Yes, that's the way it showed up.

Those instantaneous MPG readouts are meaningless, for the reasons you described; but one that gives you average MPG can be helpful. You can spot potential problems early on if you see a drop in average MPG, even if the actual MPG you're getting might not be exactly what the readout shows. You can spot a trend or variance from the "usual" MPG.
Greg Cullinan Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 I get about a dozen or so mpg in my 03 GT,its auto. That's city driving, racing to the stop sign MPG has never phased me except in 07 when gas was $4.00 a gallon and I was commuting from my shore house to work 4-5 times a week at 180 miles round trip in a Ford Expedition it was about $400 a week.(another 12 MPG vehicle) I would never not buy a car just because of gas mileage, well I shouldn't say never,at least in this point in time.

Mike, it's a continuously updated average, but not an instantaneous reading (it has that function too, but I don't use it because it's meaningless... like the example you made, or when you're at a light and getting 0 MPG). That IS darn good mileage! I get the updated average ..the way it SHOULD be ... dump those instant readouts and give us something else in that circuit! Figure my 3.7L V6 with 330 hp is getting only 19 ..soon to be 18mpg I think and it shows how well Ford is doing. Edited October 6, 2010 by Foxer
