Ok guys, I saw this real cool 1980 gmc astro thats kind of a junker but ok condition and took a picture of it and decided to do a replica of it. But the amt astro kit only comes with the older 70s style grille so to replicate the truck,I made a new one out of styrene.

But first, heres the real truck.

well its sad to see a truck like that but its fun to replicate it in model form. I always dreamed of buying that truck in real life and restoring it.

Had a friend that did that! He was driving for a company in the late 70's that was running really old equipment. His last day working for them he brought in his 63 White Freightliner cabover pulling a 45ft. flatbed and they told him to park it

in the back of the lot next to the junkers because they were retiring it and the trailer.

Around 1998 he was driving by the place and here was an auction sign out front. They had been out of business for about 10 years by then and the family was selling everything off..

The day of the auction he went down and walked the lot and back in the back in a briar thicket sat his old truck right where he had parked it. said nothing had been touched. Inside a couple of his old logs still layed on the doghouse where he had left them!

When he asked he was told it wasn't part of the auction that everthing that didn't sell they were selling for scrap! He asked what they would take for it and the trailer and the auctioneer said he would add it to the list and he could bid!

They They pulled or should say dragged it out with a loader and powerwashed it off. When it came up they started the bid on it at 500 dollars and dropped down to 300. that is what my friend bought it for!

Last time I saw it the trailer had been restored and the Freightshaker was still all apart but well on it's way!

Johnny

You are expected to get pictures for us. Some with that Freightshaker apart would be great for detailing models.

Poor old Astro.

You can use a grill from a GMC General or a Chevrolet Bison to up date your Astro.

yes I thought of that but I could not get any of those kits cheaply and quickly at the time so I just made my own.

Maybe you are like me - the truck stuff always goes high until I stop looking at it. *sighs* I can be watching auctions and the prices creep up to where it is more than I am comfortable paying - unless I forget about the auction and get side tracked. Oh well.. I still make the odd good score on models but prices for the most part ( on the good stuff anyways ) seem to be up. I made some really good buys during this past Spring but when summer came, prices sure seemed to me to go up. Maybe it's just my imagination.. :):lol:B)

yeah, sometimes you get good deals. And your right, everytime you stop looking for something you see it go so cheap. but truck stuff always draws a big croud on ebay. unless when I sell it :)

Great job man, I'm a Titan/Astro fan so I always like seeing them, the new grill looks good. I'm planning a mid 80's astro aero eventually.

Gray

Yes, the astros and titans are on one of the top trucks on my favorite list too. The aero sounds like a great project to do. You dont see the later astro aeros very much.
