Mastering scripts and emblems?

Does anybody know any tips for creating emblems and especially scripts from scratch. A lot of emblems can be done by cutting the general shape from sheet styrene and then applying a decal. Scripts can be "stolen" by foil casting if you have a source to copy from but how would you make a raised script from scratch?

I know there are some great casters on this forum! Any tips, guys?
