trey allen Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Just wanted to say hi to everyone. I haven't built a kit in about 20 years. I recently got a part time job at a local hobby shop, and all the models really got me itching. So I purchased an AMT Hippie Hemi. I wanted to take a lot of time on this, and put a lot of detail into it. I wasn't expecting the kit to be 90% chrome. I'll still try my best with it. Thanks for having the forums here. I'm going to read as much as I can, and do some learning.

trey allen Posted December 20, 2010 Author Posted December 20, 2010 Thanks guys! I just got back from the hobby store. Bought paint, glue, tools, all kinds of stuff. I wanted to try Tamiya paints, but we didn't have a Tamiya primer. I wanted to keep the manufactures the same, so I stuck with Testors Model Master. Here is what started this. A guy came into the store and ordered a 1/12 Tamiya Lola a few weeks ago. When I showed up, I decided I have to be able to build that one day. So it's time to learn how to build a respectable model!
charlie8575 Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Actually, Trey, once everything is dry, you can pretty much do what you like for primer and paint. A couple of words of caution, though. 1. Don't put solvent-based paints over acrylics; it tends to wrinkle them and cause failure. 2. Be careful with lacquers; many have chemically hot bases that will etch and possibly dissolve the plastic. For primer, most people use Dupli-Color or Plasti-Kote autmotive primers. They work well under everything and will act as a good barrier against any paint. Have fun and welcome back. Charlie Larkin
brett Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 What Charlie said , also wanted to add if you want to take the chrome plating off some the parts give them a spray of Easy Off oven cleaner, once all the plating is removed give them a good scrub with some non oily detergent then you can prime and paint as a normal piece.
