Guest Markus355 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Hi im building a 36 ford coupe atm and it will be black and candy red my question is this, the black ill be using is the alclad ii gloss black base, and im wondering will it react with the primer or the candy? (all paint products im using are duplicolour except for the black, and the clear, which are alclad)
Brendan Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I've had bad reactions with lacquers going over Alclad products. If you're using Duplicolor, just pick up a can of their lacquer gloss black.
Longbox55 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Brendan is right, don't overcoat Alclad Base with anything other than the Alclad topcoats or water based acrylics, anything else will lift it, even enamels. It does work fine over Duplicolr primer, though, and is also works fine over laquer and enamel bases.
Kanedge Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) As far as I knew, the Alclad gloss black base is an enamel. That's why Alclad topcoats rub off regular Tamiya black acrylic lacquer, Alclad needs to go over an enamel base. The company itself is called Alclad 2 Lacquers. I've had no problems using it over Tamiya primer. Edited January 18, 2011 by Kanedge
cruz Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 In my humble opinion, nothing works better than Model Master enamels for the Alclad base, I've never had any issues with it, works every time!
Guest Markus355 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 the label says lacquer. im not using it as a base for one of thier other paints, the black base is the paint job in and of itself.
Longbox55 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 As long as you spray the black last, you'll be fine. Just don't topcoat it with anything other than Alclad or a water based acrylic.

I agree with Cruz I've used Alclad over Testors gloss black for years and never had a problem. If your worried just remember to do it in light coats at low pressure and it will be ok. 38 Crush
