shatteredsoul76 Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 My ex-boss at work (switched departments) is from Alaska where it can get to -70 below. She said that you have to roll down your car windows if you pull it into a garage as the sudden temperature change will literally blow out your windows, she also said one of her younger sisters made the mistake of forgetting when she was 16 causing the windows to blow out. They also have to have electric warmers installed for every fluid a car has to keep them from freezing up, hate to know what thier electric bills were a month on say 2 cars.
joemac Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 When my dad was a young boy in Philadelphia, someone dared his friend to touch his tongue to the trolley track. Held the trolleys up for a couple of hours until someone thought to pour some warm water on the track. My sister got her bare hand stuck to a wrought iron railing once when we were little. I remember it being so cold once that if you spit upwards, it would freeze before it hit the ground.

It probably wasn't noticeable, I have a diesel that has to be plugged in during the winter. Mine has a block heater that goes in place of one of the freeze plugs to warm the antifreeze, and it doesn't hurt the electric bill much at all, maybe a buck or two a month.
sjordan2 Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 When I was in the Canadian Rockies at 40 below, I did the same thing with a cup of hot coffee; turned into ice crystals almost as soon as it left the cup. People there who don't have access to a plug for their block heater at any given time just leave their cars running. Many parking lots have plugs for each space.
