sjordan2 Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I have a metal kit body that I want to have copied in resin. It has a number of holes in the body that have to be filled in. Should I fill the holes before casting, or would it be easier to fill them afterward in resin? Will the Bondo work well with resin?
Mike Kucaba Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I'd fill them in.In fact it couldn't hurt to clean the metal thoroughly and scuff it with a scotch pad, then prime it. This would give a reasonably smooth surface for the mold rubber to form to.
von Zipper Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I used J-B Weld to close the coin slot on this diecast '49 Oldsmobile and it worked great--> if you look at the J-B Weld with the magnifier-you will see little specks of metal in it and it's hard as a rock to sand but very work-able.
VW Dave Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I have a metal kit body that I want to have copied in resin. I may be an illiterate hack, but it occurred to me that you should ask the person who is making the mold and copies. Personally, I'd use JB-Weld like Zipper suggested. Like him I've had good results using it on diecast bodies.

I did ask and got a good response, but I thought I'd get a broad range of experienced opinions by posting here.
MikeMc Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 JB Weld...little harder to work with..go slow and it will be the best

I'd definitely fill the holes with JB Weld, then if needed, a glaze of any catalyzed spot & glaze putty, to smooth off any surface imperfections. Art
