crazyjim Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Cpl. Jonathan Turner USMC was killed in Afghanistan on February 22, 2011 by an IED. Today he will be flown into Brooksville airport and escorted by an "unknown number of motorcyclists to Wilder Funeral Home in Homosassa. Saturday will be a memorial service at Lecanto High School where Taylor graduated in 2006. I plan on being part of the escort today and again on Saturday. All the schools in the County will be closing early. Citrus County has about 125,000 people. Cpl. Taylor is our 6th Fallen Hero in this War on Terror. Please consider taking a moment to remember Cpl. Jonathan Taylor USMC. The cost of freedom is NOT free!
impcon Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 You are certainly right thatthe cost of freedom is not free. It's too bad thatthere are so many who don't believe that. Thank you to ALL who serve - our respect, thanks and condolances to this brave man's family and friends
Jon Cole Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I have seen motorcades for fallen soldiers last year. It is stunning to witness. Over 70 motorcycles, police cruisers and fire trucks parked along the road w/ lights flashing... people just standing by the road. Godspeed, Cpl. Jonathan Turner.
Dragline Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Cpl Turner will be in my thoughts tonight. The 4 people in my immediate family that have seen combat have all come back. We consider ourselves very fortunate. My brother Scott has been over to the sand 7 times since 1990. He's one tough cookie. God Bless our heroes every one. Bob
crazyjim Posted March 3, 2011 Author Posted March 3, 2011 What a fantastic tribute to Cpl. Taylor. There were probably 400 bikes and thousands of people lined the route holding American flags and/or saluting. At one point a fire truck had its' ladder way up in the air with a huge American flag flying. The procession literally closed reaffic in Citrus County for 2 hours! Cars & trucks in the opposite lane all pulled over and became spectators. It was a wonderful salute to a Fallen Hero and I'm very happy and proud to have been a part of it.
Kris Morgan Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Good to hear there was lots of respect given. Godspeed Cpt. Turner.
MikeMc Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 (edited) Semper Fi and Thank you! And we can ride free because of them....NEVER FORGET Edited March 3, 2011 by Stasch
mikemodeler Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Jim, Thank you for informing us of this heroes arrival home, unfortunately not the way he or his family envisioned I am sure. Thanks also for being part of the procession, I am sure it was appreciated by his family. Cpl Turner and many other soldiers have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and that is something that we cannot forget. I try to thank every serviceman and woman when I encounter them for their service and the sacrifices their family has made for us all. As the father of a 17 year old who has designs on joining the Marine Corp in two years, I tend to get a little emotional about these posts knowing that it could be him one day. Take care Cpl. Turner, Semper Fi and Godspeed.

THAT is how fallen heros need to be sent to be with our Lord! My eyes are a bit sweaty. I hope and pray that your memorial service is peaceful with no protestors. Who knows what will happen now that the supreme court granted funeral protestors protection through freedom-of-speach. Our highest court has no common sense. God bless those in harms way. I also hope and pray we don't decide to enter Jordan or Egypt. Edited March 4, 2011 by seeker589
Harry P. Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I just saw a segment on the Today Show about those idiot people from whatever whack-job church that make a point of going to protest funerals for fallen servicemen. It it truly disgusting. The court just ruled in their favor... that is, they have the right to do what they do. Kind of ironic that their right to mock dead soldiers (freedom of speech) is protected by the Constitution of the United States, and the United States is protected by the very soldiers that they mock.

935k3 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 God Bless all our veterans and thanks for honoring them. As for the so called church the best thing that can happen is that no news agency national or local give them any more attention.
Agent G Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Semper Fidelis my forest green brother. God speed, and keep the streets of heaven safe until we meet. G

Wagoneer81 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 (edited) I just saw a segment on the Today Show about those idiot people from whatever whack-job church that make a point of going to protest funerals for fallen servicemen. It it truly disgusting. I'm not a violent man, been in several fights, never have been to jail... But, as respectful as I am to our military personnel, as emotional as I get hearing of another death in the name of Freedom and protecting the downtrodden , it wouldn't do for me to cross paths with these protestors. I would go to jail afterward... for a long time, I'm afraid and I would go with my head held high! Some things simply are worth fighting for. The memories of our fallen heroes and the piece of mind that their families require are two of those things. They fought for us, now, who's gonna fight for them?!? I believe in free speech, I am a patriot who believes in protecting peoples rights but crapping on the memories of our fallen because of some imaginary connection that a whack-job preacher conjured up between homosexuality and service-men killed in action is completely uncalled for... Ok, I've vented, I feel a little better. My eyes developed leaks while reading this thread and the screen got a bit blurry... I'm not an overly religious man but, I feel that this is appropriate--- Heavenly Father, Grant a courageous heart, a quick mind, and a serene spirit to those now in our armed forces, ready to offer their talents, and if necessary their lives, for the cause of truth, justice, and liberty. Keep them close to You in every way. Make them always, even in these difficult circumstances, true witnesses to Your goodness, love, and compassion. And finally, bring them safely back to their homes and families. Amen Godspeed, Cpl. Jonathan Turner. When you get to heaven, tell them as they have since before Guadalcanal, "Another Marine reporting, I've served my time in Hell". Semper-Fi! Carry on! Edited March 4, 2011 by Wagoneer81
whale392 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 One more folded Flag, one more grieving family, one more brother lost so that those who send our young men and women into harms way may sleep soundly and wake to remove yet one more freedom that those very soldiers defend your rights to. My flag will fly at half-staff for a fallen brother or sister, but never for a politician. My thoughts and heartt go to the family of Cpl. Turner.

Guest Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I just saw a segment on the Today Show about those idiot people from whatever whack-job church that make a point of going to protest funerals for fallen servicemen. It it truly disgusting. It's great to hear that in this case, a returning soldier was treated properly. Whatever you think of the war, the reasons behind it, or the political implications, etc. the young men and women willingly serve their country despite the risks should be respected regardless of anyone's feeligns about the conflict they're in. Again, it's great to hear that this was the case, and the community rallied behind this soldier and his family. You are right mark. I just ask one thing, do not lump all Christians in with these people. They are a lunatic fringe, and not representative of true Christianity at all. I pray for this soldier's family in this time of loss, and I salute him for his service. Freedom certainly is not free, and while I do not agree with the protestors, it is this country's freedom that allows them to do so, and I support the freedom to do that. Remember 10 years ago! NEVER FORGET!!
crazyjim Posted March 4, 2011 Author Posted March 4, 2011 There will be plenty of Veterans at the service Saturday. If the church group shows up, we will make sure they never get close to the family and that the family will not see or hear them - whatever it takes. I'm hoping to be allowed time tomorrow to recite the "North Wall Words" to Cpl. Turner's Mom & Dad. I would use our customized version from the Canadien Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I think the words are the best way to explain to a family on a warrior feels about the passing of one of our own. As long as we live, your son Jonathan, shall be loved. As long as we live, your son Jonathan, shall be remembered. As long as we live, your son jonathan, shall live.

SkinnyDan Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I live in a military town and work at a large Air Force Base. It's amazing to see anytime we bring a fallen hero home, the entire base and town shut down and line the route. Normally there is a procession half a mile long. I tear up everytime.
imatt88 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 RIP Cpl Turner When I was in Afghanistan, my platoon did Honor Guard for two fallen comrades killed by an IED north of Kandahar, Watching that metal, flag draped casket go by you, to be loaded into a C-130, is a feeling that I cannot describe.... I do not want to ever have to do that again. kitbash1 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 A different time and a long ago war, but the sentement is the same. Sleep well Marine. Your job is done. In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row that mark our place, and in the sky, the larks still bravely singing fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow Loved and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe, to you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields. Major John McCrae 1915.

Pretty sure the fire truck was from the station right there at Hwy 44 and Kensington drive. He's not kidding about the traffic, Hwy44 was brought to a crawl, and U.S. 19 south was turned into a long parking lot. As sad as the occasion is, the sheer number of folks who came out to show their respect for this young man was a sight to see. Godspeed, Cpl. Taylor.

But, given the sheer number of retired military and war vets (my father among them), and the overall decent nature of the folks here, the Westboro bunch would have found themselves in very unfriendly territory.
