Greg Myers Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Is there another source other than the aftermarket for braided fuel line ?
Duntov Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Hi Greg: I use the wrapped wire found in the bead supply section at Hobby Lobby. It comes in several different sizes down to VERY fine.....it might work for you. I use the fine stuff for braided plug wires and it is very convincing. Give it a look next time you are there. Regards Bill (Duntov)
Steven Zimmerman Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 If your home has adjustable window blinds, check out the cords that are used to 'adjust' them.....you might get a pleasant surprise..........theZman
david_isa_ninja Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 ive used guitar string, it works some what well.
camarobuilder Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Believe it or not, I've used painted kite string on several models. i paint it with Testors chrome, and then paint the blue and red hose ends. Obviously, I wouldn't do this on a contest model, but it's convincing enough for most in the display case. This is by far much cheaper and easier than any other method I've tried. Frank

But it there a way to make it rigid ? So that is does not slump down on manifolds ,fan belts etc ?
John Pol Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Well I use briaded fishing line from WalMart it comes in black. But can east painted to look right and cheap to for 500 feet for about 4 bucks. John Pol

Frank I like the fan belt and distributor wiring also
camarobuilder Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 (edited) It's fairly rigid once paintd. I just keep an old jar of paint, and dip the whole piece in the paint. I use a small amount of CA glue on the ends before paintine the simulated hose ends. Thanks for the compliment on the wires and belt. The wires are Dteail master with a scratch built crab cap distributor. The belt is a thinned kit piece. These are another example of the hose done the same way. camarobuilder Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 ...Also wanted to add this thought. If you notice where I made a "tee" at the fuel line junction, think about how easy that is...A loop for the carb bowls, and another piece glued in the tee. Paint and that's it... I can attest to the fact that working with real braid and fittings is a real PITA...LOL, and it's ALOT more expensive. A roll of kite string, a tube of Krazy glue, some chrome, blue, and red paint is all you need. Remember, these pictures are pretty extreme close ups. It looks much better from normal viewing distance.
Steven Zimmerman Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 That tip is awesome. But it there a way to make it rigid ? So that is does not slump down on manifolds ,fan belts etc ?You're only going to use a piece an inch or so long; doesnt droop....If it does, just hit it with a drop of superglue; it will 'wick' into the cord through capillary action. I generally hit mine with a silver magic marker for 'color'....
camarobuilder Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 here are some images of some very flexible wire i was using that was intended for beading use, this is a braided wire inside of a clear vinyl coating. it comes in different flexability ratings and what is used is the most flexible of the bunch and the biggest unless there's something new. the company that makes is is Beadalon and i found it in Michaels craft store in the bead isle. i was using this stuff previous to finding out about Pro Tech's excellent braided line because i don't care for the overly coarse Detail Master braid that's been around since the stone ages. i will still use the Beadalon stuff on occasion but much prefer the realism and very user friendly Pro Tech line over anything else. the fittings on these builds are also beading "crimp tubes" from the same isle and they are pretty cheap. colored with Sharpie's they look okay but obviously not as nice as real hex fittings. the beading wire because of it's vinyl coating superglues like a dream and the most flexible rated wire also has a realistic amount of bend and spring to it compared to the 1:1 braided line. That's also a great idea with a very convincing outcome. Great work. Frank
