sjordan2 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Perhaps the dean of automotive journalism; former editor of Car and Driver, founder of Automobile magazine. Though he was famously cantankerous, he was very nice to me when I called him out of the blue to get some research material for ads I was creating for Exxon. http://www.autoweek.com/article/20110328/CARNEWS/303289999
Danno Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 That's sad news. Davis was brilliant!! His C&D of the 60's and 70's was a huge influence on my developing carlife. Still enjoyed his columns through the 80's, 90's, 00's and especially upon his recent return to C&D. As a side note, IMHO, C&D really lost its way several years ago and DED's return was the only reason I re-subscribed. Sorely missed already; RIP David E. And, THANKS FOR THE RIDE!!! I doubt anyone ever met David E Davis Jr. and forgot him...he was that kind of guy. Growing up in the 70s, when cars were boring, Car and Driver somehow kept cars interesting even as the industry turned it's back on enthusiasts. There are generations of today's enthusiasts that owe something to DED Jr. for telling us it was OK to love cars, and at the same time not accept sub-par automobiles. He'll be missed, but the automotive landscape in the United States will reflect bits of his personality for many, many years to come. Well said, Mark!
Cato Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 (edited) I grew up with DED and those guys-Yates, Jeanes, Brown, LJK, Manney, Egan, Csaba. Miss them all and those days-we're gettin' older... Edited March 28, 2011 by Cato
