Folks,

I'm building a '70 Torino Cobra and it's time to deal with the headlights and taillights. The headlights are clear and sit in chrome buckets, while the taillights are red and attach directly to the body. How can I make these lights look as realistic as possible?

Paul,

For the taillights, try putting a piece of BMF behind each one. That substantially improves their appearance as 1:1 taillights are backed by chrome.

You can't improve much if any on the headlights, the taillights can be put over foil or even patterned cigarette foil for a nice effect. Make sure to remove any molded in pin locators and cover their respective mounting holes.

Drill a tiny hole in the center of the headlight bucket and insert a sewing pin. Add a dab of epoxy or CA on the backside, and when dry snip off the excess length of pin.

The pin head makes a pretty good scale "bulb"

Go to your local craft store(Michaels,Jo Anne Fabrics,A.C.Moore,Pat Catans, etc) and pick up a bag of blue sequins, costing about 2 bucks. They make these by punching lil holes in the sequins, and a lot of these 'punch pieces' will be in the bottom of the bag (bags are clear plastic,CHECK THE BAG,some have a lot more than others).....perfect 'blue dots',just glue them on your tail lights.........Steve'theZman'Zimmerman

Hey, I like that idea, I will have to use that in the future.

For newer cars, try a model railroad "grain of wheat" bulb in place of the straight pin. They can be painted with clear acrylics if you want different effects.

If there is a lot of chrome around the headlight area, I'll paint the bucket chrome silver to give them a little contrast. Next ones gets a straight pin.
