Kaleb Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Ok, I've done started with painting...now my next step to work on is clear coating. I know I have to let the paint gas out before doing so or you will get all kinds of bubbles(bad experience) What paint works best with what clear coat? I know enamel over lacquer is not good or is it different with clear? My two top choices are Testors and Krylon. I don't and will eventually buy Tamiya.
moparfarmer Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Joshua, I use exclusivly Duplicolor from an auto parts store, straight from the can. Two dustings then a little heavier. It comes out smooth but not like glass. Clear coat from Duplicolor and then wet sand and polish. Spray clear same as paint. I use 2000 wet but some(many go to higher grit)then I I polish out with Meguiars cleaner(maroon bottle) followed with their Gold class paste or Scrtch X. Lacquer over enamel is a NO NO every time. I've always stayed away from Krylon as its super hot. With my paint I warm them up with warm water then spray. Don't use boiling water. Could make for bad accident(explosion, with paint everywhere) Hope this helps in some way with your questions.
Scale-Master Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 What paint works best with what clear coat? Answer: The same brand as the clear is a safe bet. I know enamel over lacquer is not good or is it different with clear? Answer: It is Lacquer over Enamel that is dangerous to the outcome. Usually enamel over lacquer is a non-issue. My two top choices are Testors and Krylon. I don't and will eventually buy Tamiya. Opinion: Of those three choices for gloss body painting, Tamiya is my first, Testors is second, and Krylon is not something I would use. (I do use Krylon for some non-body related parts.)
