Thanks guys. I never knew semi trucks used under chassis exhaust. I thought they did the stack exhaust because it was some sort of law or something. Is their a reason stack exhaust is the common way to do it?

i would say the main reason for havin an upright exhaust system is to get the noise away from the cab, especialy if you have a set of team drivers. the one in the bunk will really apreciate it :lol:

No, not any laws saying you have to have stacks. :lol:

As for why, I couldn't really tell you an exact reason stacks are more highly used than grass burner exhausts, but a pretty good guess is probably to reduce the fumes, carbon monoxide, and heat, especially in sleeper trucks. I'm not saying stacks don't get hot, that's why you usually find heat shield guards around the mufflers on trucks that have them mounted to the sides, but there would be less heat trapped under the truck to make it more comfortable to sleep. As for the fume and carbon monoxide, if that was coming up from under a sleeper, you'd have the deepest sleep of your life, and you wouldn't live to enjoy it!! ;)

The only other benefit to stacks I can think of offhand right now is, especially in the case of the older trucks like the Titan, stacks allow the exhaust smoke, commonly referred to as "blowing black coal", caused by the older fuels and near nonexistant emissions laws back in the day to go up in the air instead of in the faces of other motorists.

It will definitely need to be widened, that's the one thing stopping me from putting one on a Freighliner Dual Drive COE. I really like the idea of using one on the Titan, I've never seen one of those kits built up as anything other than a highway tractor.

As for widening the bed I was thinking about just making some custom step fenders. Since that will also solve the how do you get down from this issue the wedge has.

Another question. Would the roof of the Titan be strong enough to hold a winch while in operation or would it pull up? Think 2250-2500 pound race car on the other end.

There is a very practicle reason for fitting the exhaust up in the air. I read an article on Clessie Cummins sometime ago. When he first built his Diesel engine it was fitted into a truck (Obviously). The exhaust ran under the frame as was the norm in the early days. But apparently on testing the trucks performance on some winding mountain roads. The engine produced a lot of black smoke. A poor unfortunate driver in a car following could not see where he was going and ran of the road. I don't know if he was killed or injured. Anyway as a result of this the exhaust was stuck up in the air behind the cab so the black smoke would be dissipated up in the atmosphere and not blind other road users.
