We have a long-standing forum on Tips, Tricks and Tutorials, plus two new ones on Tips, Tricks and Techniques, and How Do I...?

How Do I...tell one from another? Management elucidation would be appreciated.

Posted

"Modeling Q&A" is a new section, comprised of "How Do I...?" and "TIps, Tricks and Techniques."

Step1: We created the new section so that all of the "how to" content would be found in one place.

Step 2: The content from the old "Tips, Tricks and Tutorials" was supposed to be merged into the new TT&T section, and then the old TT&T header was supposed to be deleted.

The problem is that Gregg did Step 1 but still hasn't done Step 2.

I hope that answer meets your desired level of management elucidation and edumacation... :)

If executed that way, fine. But what's the difference between "Tips, Tricks and Techniques," and "How Do I...?"

Is "TT&T" supposed to be unsolicited tips, and "How Do I" is people asking specific questions? A clarifying subhead would be good for each one. The old "Tips, Tricks and Tutorials" seemed to be a grab bag for both approaches. Not to add complication to the process, but I think "TT&T" needs to be broken up into subdivisions such as paint, interiors, suspensions, engines, etc. – whatever leads you quickly to better and more appropriate answers, but not so much that it becomes unmanageable. I hate to say this, but I think SAM has it set up more properly.

Exactly.

We wanted to put all of the "how to" type stuff in one location. Right now people post tips and "how do I" questions in the "General" section, in the Tips section...all over the place. I want to have ONE place to go for all questions and answers.

Of course, having a specific place to post isn't going to guarantee that people will actually do it. There's always that certain group of people who either don't know, or don't care, where to post what... but at least if we do have the place for it, most people will get used to it and know to post there.

Harry ,

Tips Tricks and Techniques is already overdue for a good facelift , as in cleaned out ! Whole lotta misinformation put in there by one of the young studs . He went running into the mine field without the map in his back pocket and misinformational shrapnel is flying ' all over the place !

I believe in free speech more so then the next guy but this is just plain ugly and needs to be removed .

I agree 100%.

Which is why I said in a previous post that "Tips, Tricks and Techniques" needs a full time moderator (an experienced and knowledgeable builder) to edit out the junk and keep the info legit. But if we don't have a person to do that, then what? I can't stop people from posting their tips. It's an open forum, and unless I have someone who will take on the responsibility of keeping the tips section clean, what can I do???

I nominate Donn. Or suggest that everyone buy his DVD!

Let's get Donn to do it, yeah, yeah! He can keep us all on the straight and narrow!

Met him last year at a show down here. We talked for nearly 45 minutes, watched his video and discussed models and life. He got $20 out of me for the video and a fan of his for life. Haven't used the all of tips yet (long story there) but his approach is so simple and straightforward I highly recommend using it.

Well, Donn got $60.00 out of me for his videos. You're missing alot of good info and techniques of how-to on your models if you don't pick up his videos. He might be old,but he knows what he's talking about.

I agree with Skip ! Every member of MCM has to buy a copy of both DVDs and then we won't need the TIps column at all , everybody will know all there is to know because of the DVDs ! Right ? Bwaaahhhaahhha !

In all seriousness , I am not sure that I have the time to take on such a position and do it justice . At times , when provoked , I do not play well with others , nor suffer fools gladly , this could also present a problem . Greg might be forced to ban me for bad language the first time an idiot accuses me of playing God for deleting his post based on his asinine assumption that laquer paints are God's gift to modelers ! That's a joke , KIds ! Aimed at Harry , none the less ! Lol !

We do need to do something , of that , there is no doubt . We have too many new faces around here and need to be responsible when it comes to providing them with the best information that is available .I will discuss this with Kathie to see what she thinks and then get in touch with Harry !

I still like Skip's idea ! Lol !

Bob , I might have sat behind Moses in 5th grade , but you sat in front of him in 1st !

Mr.Yost, Thank you for letting me be the 1st dumb kid in the smart row. Please paint something for the masses, your talent will not go unanswered.Later,Dude

Don Yost is one of the most delightful, talented, entertaining, and unbiased people I've ever met...By 'unbiased, I mean he picks on everybody EQUALLY !(GRIN) secondly,I don't see where we need to change ANYTHING on here. It's simple.....you read the posted header, you either 'click' on it,or you don't !....How simple can that be? "Overcomplicatitus sets in once again,IMHO....'Z'

I love Donn and the whole idea....Assuming Kathie gives the OK.....:)

BUT we must have a lacquer safe zone..just because Donn uses lacquer thinner..doesn't mean he is one of us!!!!:P

Let me just add this, which I have harped on for quite a long time...

Many of these tips, tricks and stuff could be found by our members if we had a decently operating search function. I say this because of a new thread on 3D printing of plastic parts, which has been discussed at some length in prior threads over the past couple of years. I know the subject, I know the name of the earlier threads, yet MCM's search could not find it and gave me "no results found,"

then a page that just repeated the page on the MCM subject.

How can we upgrade search? As I've mentioned before, it works pretty well at scaleautomag.com. But MCM has a much better and more advanced forum for serious modelers, and should overtake them in this area.

If you don't believe me, here's a search of "3D printing" at scaleautomag.com:

http://cs.scaleautomag.com/SCACS/search/SearchResults.aspx?q=3d+printing&o=Relevance

Here's a search for 3D printing on this site, where it has been discussed every bit as much if not more. How relevant is this?
