Jordan White Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Just purchased the rereleased Monogram Mustang SVO kit, and I'm going to build it practically stock, with the exception of some Lightning 5-spoke wheels (figure on new hubs used with the correct F-150 bolt pattern.) Lightning wheels are from a built kit, so they are currently sitting in the purple stuff. Since I haven't seen anyone else doing so (unless it's in the Fox Body Community Build), I'm going to try and correct the flaws of the kit along the way. Of course, since I'll be doing the '84 version, I have to back-date the headlights to the correct sealed beam style. This shouldn't be too difficult though with the way the light buckets are made, I should just be able to do some minimal mods and use some smaller lenses. (I really think the model on the box looks bug-eyed with the flush lenses ). Sit tight, as I will be starting on the engine and transmission!
Rick Schmidt Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 (edited) Gonna follow along cause I am at this very moment about to start my SVO. I also wanna backdate the headlights but gotta figure out if thats all thats needed first. Plannin on doin mine in Dark grey and slightly lowered. Being a factory 5 lug Fox makes wheel options a bit easier too hehe Edited July 18, 2011 by Rick Schmidt
Jordan White Posted July 18, 2011 Author Posted July 18, 2011 Color is still up in the air for me. I'm thinking red or white.
Guest Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I have an MPC kit (or what's left of it) that has the '84 headlights. I always thought they were wrong.
whale392 Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 At least the engine is already correct for the 84 backdate. Headlight buckets aren't too bad, as the kit gives you ample room to recess them. Not that it can be replicated easily in scale, but EARLY 84 SVOs tail light lenses are different than later 84-86 units in that the upper 3 1/16th inch stripes stopped at the back-up 'white' section of the tail light. Mid-84 to 86, the stripes continued all the way through.
whale392 Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Hey Mark, wondered when you would come in! 85-86 got the expanded color palette, 84 was a short color run. However, if accuracy isn't an issue, color is completely up to you. I am doing an 85.5 SVO right now with the '08 Bullitts and in 1993 Calypso Metallic. Accurate as built, nope. Accurate as a friends car, yup!
Jordan White Posted July 18, 2011 Author Posted July 18, 2011 (edited) Was wondering when you'd chime in Bradley! Since I don't have a Turbo T-bird kit to steal parts from, I modified the kit trans to look like a T-5. It could be better, but I think it's a fairly accurate representation (even though you won't really see it once installed ). As you can see, the bottom doesn't go down quite as far, and there isn't as much detail (ribbing and such), but the overall shape is there. EDIT: Since people posted when I was making this post, I'll add here. Wasn't paying attention to colors very well haha, so I'll just say it was a custom paint job. Tony T Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I'm working on my red moulded 85 SVO that I bought in 84 or 85 when the kit was new!! I hate red plastic!! I'll be keeping an eye on the engine build-up as you go...I haven't started on mine yet!
whale392 Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 This is part of the reason I like the FOX Mustang chassis. The guys who own them and the guys who like them can have a civil conversation (with both facts and opinions) without it blowing up into some flame-fest. Keep at it Jordan; and a White SVO (as long as all the proper trim detailing is done) looks good. You did an admirable job of trying to convert the (not even a good representation of it) SROD 4 speed (which was not even offered after mid-83) into the T5 5 speed trans. The two little nibs you see behind the oil filter are supposed to be the oil cooler/turbo water cooled center section lines. Believe me when I say it is a convoluted mess of piping/lines! As shallow as the detail is, I myself wouldn't even bother with trying to get that detail laid in (or if I did, I would scratchbuild it). Once the 84-specific intake is on the head, that detail disappears anyway.

I'm with Bradley on the White SVO they do look good. I was happy to see the listed colors Gonna go look for a Charcoal to see how close it matches my color choice Jordan ya trans look good Just too bad ya aint gonna be able to see ya work when done
whale392 Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 The ride height will have to be adjusted, as it sits way too high out of the box. It will build up into a fair shelf model, but requires A LOT of modification to accurately represent an SVO for show/contest purposes.
GTMust Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 You know I'm gonna be following this thread very closely......... Can't wait to see more progress pictures. I'm going to be starting another "oddball" Fox body Mustang build soon... when I clear some space on my workbench! Keep those Foxes coming..... Tony
Jordan White Posted July 19, 2011 Author Posted July 19, 2011 (edited) Yeah I'll be adjusting the suspension anyways since I'm going to be adding the "pen spring coil springs" rather than the...solid...rods that they have. Edit: painted the wheels. Edited July 20, 2011 by Jordan White
