Junkman Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 (edited) Maybe we could get several guys together to buy a giant chunk, then have it cut into smaller pieces. It's always these socialist ideas that make most sense. Please count me in. Shipping to England shouldn't be expensive considering the stuff is feather light? Edited August 9, 2011 by Junkman
vaughn Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 This stuff sounds great. Sounds like something we all need in our work area.
1320wayne Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 It's always these socialist ideas that make most sense. Please count me in. Shipping to England shouldn't be expensive considering the stuff is feather light? I don't think I'd refer to this stuff as "feather light". I have a few pieces from being cut into sections of about 2"x2"x9" and each one of those weighs about 1 to 2 pounds.
vaughn Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 waiting for a quote on the 1"x20"x60" and a machinable medium kit. Just interested. Just sold my boat,so what the heck !!
SuperStockAndy Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 GEEZ the price of that stuff. I'd just buy hard foam...
LDO Posted August 10, 2011 Author Posted August 10, 2011 Here's my first effort with this stuff. It's the front half of a 1/25 P-38 drop tank. I got the measurements wrong on the back so I just cut it in half. I'll try to make a new back half. I don't want to waste any of this stuff. I started with two long, thin rectangles. I marked off the center lengthwise and made a small notch for the lathe's live center. I used a few small drops of super glue to hold them together. After machining, I slid an X-Acto in between them and popped the two halves apart. They will be vacuform masters so I can end up with a thin shell.
Mike Kucaba Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I contacted a company that sells a 15lb density modeling board for $8.26 per board foot. The available sizes are 2-4-6-8 x 24 inches. Anyone know how to calculate this? (yeah I flunked math..twice)
Kit Basher Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 If they're calculating board feet the same as wood, then 1 board foot= 1" x 12" x 12", or 144 cubic inches. So multiply the three dimensions in inches and divide by 144. If the sizes you're describing are 1" thick, then 2" x 24"= 48 c.i., or 1/3 BF. (48/144 = 1/3) I find it easier to figure the length in feet and divide by 12 (it's the same thing, trust me). So 1" thick x 8" wide x 2 feet long = 16, divide by 12 = 1-1/3 BF. Clear as mud?
Mike Kucaba Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Thanks, that does give another idea. I believe those dimensions I posted are squares,or blocks e.g. 2"- 4"- 6"-8" x 24L. I googled and found one that treated the calculations as wood (even with little pictures of wood!). One thing I noticed and this is very frustrating is why don't they just put up a price list of standard sizes! It's not like this is a commodity trading like gold or corn.
bisc63 Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 These sample packs might be the way to go for first-timers: http://www.freemansupply.com/MachinableMediaSam.htm
Mike Kucaba Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 I just filled out the request for quote form. Let's see what happens.
Mike Kucaba Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Well I placed my order today . Freeman sure has a weird method for doing business, but it's their business so on we go.
