Drake69 Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 (edited) I did a ton of research on this subject before getting started, but I'm ready to proceed on it now. This will be the '70 Nova Stuntman Mike drove in the movie "Death Proof". The first problem was trying to confirm which year Nova was used in the movie. Everything from '69 to '73 has been mentioned, but the crew that made the cars for the film confirmed that at least 2 of the Novas used were from 1970, non-COPO, non-SS cars. So, starting with 2 different Nova kits... ...and... I will be using the non-SS grilles in the COPO kit and most everything else in the SS kit. The wheels that come in the SS kit are correct for this car (they were NOT mags...), and I will have to scrounge in the parts box for a sport bucket seat and sport steering wheel for a more correct interior. The seats that come in both kits will be put away for another Nova project later on, and I'll be ordering 2 "rubber duckie" mascot ornaments from Down Under here real soon. The skull and lightning bolts I've already obtained from Hazzardous Decals, so now it's time to get building! (I can't WAIT to trash that interior with metal plates, reinforcement door bars, plexiglass dividers, and full-on rollcage! Will also be trying to source a "tractor seat" for the passenger as well! LOL!) Edited August 8, 2011 by Drake69
LAone Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 this is gonna be cool. looking forward to how yours comes out.
Drake69 Posted August 8, 2011 Author Posted August 8, 2011 And some shots of the actual car for comparison...
made007 Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 (edited) i though i was the only one that like that car here, i always love to see it build, mine came out great, hope yours too, keep updating cause im following this one Edited August 9, 2011 by made007
Drake69 Posted August 9, 2011 Author Posted August 9, 2011 (edited) Thanks guys! Engine has a nice coat of red, drying now. To do the interior, I cut away all the armrests and window cranks, then reversed the door panels so that the detailed panel trim faces the outside. This will allow me to draw the inside door metal on the panel to simulate the ripped out trim. I got the idea just from looking at the panels and trying to figure out if I needed to cut new styrene sheets to the pattern, then realizing I have a nice blank canvas on the other side. I have also trimmed the "Nova" logo and emblem fins off the outer side panels and smoothed them out with sanding and melted styrene from dipping a strip in Pro-Weld, and now the body is drying from a spray of black primer. Flat black will go on it next. I'm cannibalizing an old AMT Ford Taurus NASCAR racer for the rollcage, so I have quite a bit of work to accomplish with that one. Pix to come soon! Drake69 Posted August 9, 2011 Author Posted August 9, 2011 Pix!!!! Black primer, followed by Tamiya Flat Black, followed by two wetcoats of Semi Gloss Black. After drying I'll check to see how it looks before applying any more.
Drake69 Posted August 10, 2011 Author Posted August 10, 2011 I had to hit it with a last wetcoat of flat black to tone it down, will post pics later on.
Drake69 Posted August 11, 2011 Author Posted August 11, 2011 (edited) More pix... Only thing the engine needs now is some Detailer Black to make it look oily and used... Rollcage and "death proof" box being constructed from parts off a NASCAR raceer... Will also use sheet styrene and plastruct diamond plate for a rougher edge to the look. Door panels were reversed and small strips of styrene were used to simulate the cross-bracing on the doors and jambs (a little hard to see in the pics...). Edited August 11, 2011 by Drake69
Drake69 Posted August 12, 2011 Author Posted August 12, 2011 Last pic... I used acetate for the "death chamber" and diamond plate for the bottom panels and floorboards. I'm adding other racecar panels behind the chamber and driver's seat for reinforcement.
Drake69 Posted August 12, 2011 Author Posted August 12, 2011 (edited) Interior is complete!!! EDIT: I added a support pillar (strip styrene) to the "plexiglass" panels so that they would be attached together, forming the box. I also added one more area of diamond plate behind the driver's seat for reinforcement. Edited August 17, 2011 by Drake69
Drake69 Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 Last two pics of the night... Undercarriage and engine dabbed with Detailer Black for a dingy look... And some detail to the side markers and door locks...
Drake69 Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 More pix... Body is on the chassis... Couple shots of the interior from outside... Hmmm.... wonder what the "red discoloration" is? Might be.....
Drake69 Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 Last pic is the engine bay, still need a few decals and some Detailer Black to roughen it up...
Drake69 Posted August 16, 2011 Author Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) Next set of pix! Front grill is on the car, Detailer Black in the middle to darken it up some more... Edited August 16, 2011 by Drake69
Drake69 Posted August 16, 2011 Author Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) Now have the decals in the engine bay done, chrome trim under the hood lip, and the skull on the hood! Still need to touch up some areas, but it's almost done! Still waiting on the "duck" though... Edited August 16, 2011 by Drake69
Drake69 Posted August 17, 2011 Author Posted August 17, 2011 how many hours have you loged on this I've been averaging about 4~5 hours a day, project was started 08/08, roughly 60~70 hours so far. And all this while looking for IT work! It sucks to be unemployed. If I didn't have this hobby to fall back on I would probably have killed people by now. At least I'm getting some nice models done!
Dr. Cranky Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Wow, it's looking good. I love all the interior details, and you are making the cage look pretty good too. Nice, hope you finish it soon.
Drake69 Posted August 17, 2011 Author Posted August 17, 2011 Thanks! Okay. At this point I've taken this one as far as I can get. I still have the rubber duckie coming from Auslowe Models down under so there's no telling how long it will get here. Last set of pix before completion...
