84vanagon Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Pardon the stupid questions, but what makes that van a "Horst" (I'm mildly familiar what what Horst used to be) and how many of the VW vans could get out of their own way before the Eurovan's hit the market? I was listening to an oldies station and "A Walk In The Black Forest" (don't like the song though) by Horst Jankowski came on. So I thought my Vanagon looks like a "Horst" so Horst its been.
84vanagon Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Haaa, you got love those old 1.9 Wasserboxer Vanagons. Not enough power to get out of it's own way. I couldn't ever understand why VW put such an anemic engine in those things. The steep gearing makes up (somewhat) for the lack of power. You find you have to plan way ahead for any "speed" moves, its best to take it slow and easy and watch the world pass you by. It'll punch a big hole in the wind once you get it rolling. VW advertised a top speed of 88 mph. when new. I suspect it is governed. I had Horst up to 85 one morning when I was running late for work. It was wound kinda tight, but felt like it had more.

That Capsul, errr I mean Console, sorry, Consul, is too cool. I would love to have one of them. I like that, what are your plans? Basicly replacing two fenders due to rust and the appearance of having un-matching colors on it (it will be bug-gut-green + Seablue), maybe the trunk lid, may keep the lid tho, it has a real charming dent on it, fix the floors so ya can get in without setting your foot through it.. And just drive it as a ratty piece of old a$$. Once i've rebuilt the engine... The Saab is a 900 GL Carburettor non-turbo, also up for restoration (even tho ya can get a close-mint condition one for about 300-400$ over here, but it would'nt be MY 900 ..) Edit: Some concept designs; Consul plans i've made for kicks: The serious consul plans (the only photoshop work is the purple background thingy, rustwater on the hood, and the blue fender (that's how the "finnished" thin will look like) And a better photo of how my consul looks like (before i dis-assembled the front and did the pinstriping): The serious 900 plans (early sketch): Edited July 8, 2008 by JAFFA
JAFFA Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Almost forgot about this faithful little servant, completely restored. The most irreliable vehicle i've ever owned, but it allways got me there, sooner or later. But now that i'm of drivers age (18 over here) i don't need it anymore, for some reason it just don't feel right to sell it tho.... Handpainting all theese in gold was a b**ch..
Nick F40 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 (edited) That Consul sure has some work to do but those 900 plans sound sweet, autocross? rally? Edited July 9, 2008 by Nick F40

JAFFA Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 That Consul sure has some work to do but those 900 plans sound sweet, autocross? rally? Street And keep driving it to work and school offcourse, and the eventual dirtrack, nothing beats dirt!

Just thought Id show some pics of my 62SS now that I figured out photobucket. This is the day I got it about 14 years ago. Its ugly, but not a lot of rust. This is in the late 90s before I got serious about restoring it. This is when I first put it back on the road after about 6 years in my garage. Last year at a car show with my buddy and his 68 Javelin. Thanks for looking. Ed

Sorry, aint got more pics right now... As for model, i know i saw a photo somewhere... Ah here we go: http://images.google.se/imgres?imgurl=http...v%3D2%26hl%3Dsv Seems like a pretty poor model of a -60 Consul (wich is basically the same as a -59) I just sent an email to this site to check their pricing on this one, would be fun to try and modify th model to look like my own one.

chebbysteve Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Not a really bad looking model of the Consul, Jaffa. Only thing is, it seems to be 1/43 scale. Wow, would really love to find something 1/25-1/24. If you find any more pics of yours, I'd really be interested in seeing them. Thanks...
