Hawk312 Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Ok, this is the first time that I remember having this much of an issue with Duplicolor sprays. Or maybe Model Master Lacquer? I am using Duplicolor Metallic Blue over Model Masters Wimbledon White. I sprayed the Wimbledon White first, sanded with 1000 grit, masked stripes and sprayed a light coat of Duplicolor clear, then sprayed the blue stripes. After a day or two, I checked on it, and noticed the blue had pulled back from the masked edge. Thinking it might have been the clear underneath, I allowed it to fully cure, then sanded again with 1000 grit really well, remasked, and then sprayed just the blue in light mist coats. After 24 hours I checked it again, and you can see in the pictures below it did the exact same thing. The only thing I can think of is some kind of incompatibility between the Model Masters and Duplicolor formulas, but I don`t ever remember having issues between the two. Some of you guys may remember my Fathom Green 1/12 Z/28 from way back when, which I used the same process for without issues. Unless you guys have any ideas, I guess I am just going to try to find another metallic blue color in the Model Master Lacquer line I guess. Here`s the Camaro that didn`t give me any fits:
whale392 Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Could it be tape contamination? Is the tape adhesive starting to leech out of the tape, causing a reaction between its chemical composition and the paint chemical composition? I have seen the paint/tape react that way at work, when it comes in contact with old tape. Just a thought.....
Hawk312 Posted August 20, 2011 Author Posted August 20, 2011 Hmmm...interesting. I didn`t even think of that. Actually, from memory, I think I used the Tamiya tape for the Camaro, and the 3M stuff for this one. Maybe I will give the Tamiya a try?
Harry P. Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I don't know what you mean when you say the blue "pulled back" from the edge? Do you mean that the blue actually lifted off? If not, then from the photos it looks to me like good old-fashioned paint seeping under the edge of the tape.
Hawk312 Posted August 20, 2011 Author Posted August 20, 2011 Oh sorry guys, I should clarify. I`m not sure if you can see in the pictures that there appears to be a faint blue line outside of each edge of each stripe. This is where the masking tape line was originally. When I first sprayed the blue, it went right up to that line, and I guess as it dried, it pulled back from the line. When I first removed the tape, the lines were actually razor sharp. Now you can see around the front of the scoop, the white center line is actually thinner, and it gets thicker as you move across either way from it. At the front of the scoop it seems to have held its place not pulled back as much.
sjordan2 Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 (edited) Would there be any difference in the behavior of the metallic paint on the Mustang stripes and the non-metallic on the Camaro stripes? In any case, your paint jobs are always awesome and if you're confused about this one, it would be important to get to the bottom of this to inform shlubs like me. Edited August 21, 2011 by sjordan2

The metallic vs. solid color is another aspect I didn`t think of. On this one, it is in reverse compared to the Camaro (metallic stripes on the Mustang vs. solid on the Camaro). BTW, I`ve been a "shlub" in training for almost 30 years now, and still messing things up. :D Thanks everyone for the ideas. I am going to visit my Local Hobby Lobby tomorrow and try either Royal Blue Pearl or Deja Blue.
MikeMc Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 How long after shooting the blue did you wait to un mask? If you waited too long this might be your culprit. I suspect it might be the due to the transparency of the metallic, and as your shooting lacquers all the coats will soften each other..that said I'm not a big fan of the blue tape with lacquers. I prefer tamiya or the green 3M tapes...
