rickd13 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 (edited) I read on here somewhere that after you mask off an area, in order to spray a different color, that you can spray a coat of clear over the masked edge so you do not get any seepage. I'm am using Duplicolor spray paint color and Duplicolor clear. Both are in spray cans (not an air-brush). The area that has to be painted ( roof of the car which is supposed to replicate a white vinyl) only has primer on it now. The area that is going to be masked off (the body of the car which is red) is already painted and cleared. Is it a good idea to lay down a coat of clear over the masked edge before I spray the second color? If I do spray a clear coat first, will the second color (which is white) cover over the clear without any problem? Should I spray the coat of clear over the whole area that is going to be painted or can I just spray along the masked edges or will that be noticeable? Thanks.Rick. Edited August 22, 2011 by rickd13
Mike Kucaba Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 You only need to spray along the tape edge... but pretty tough with a spray can. The clear shouldn't have any affect on the white.
High octane Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I've done this several times with spray cans and got good results. You just spray some clear on the tape edge, and when that dries you spray your second color. Therefore if there is any bleedthrough, it would be? You got it, CLEAR!

Yep, just use the same type as the paint you are using, for best predicatable results. Anyone tried that Frog Tape for masking? I get fantastic results from Tamiya or 3M Scotch blue, and see no need to pay that crazy price for the Frog stuff. Though I am sure some people have tried it.
Skydime Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Rob: Yeah that frog tape is expensive. Ive got some left over from a bathroom painting project. I haven't done any two tones lately but, maybe trying the left over frog tape would be a good excuse. If I do, I'll try to post results...better than throwing it out. lol
scalenut Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 (edited) never had the best results with crepe/paper based tapes .. great for roller painted walls but hard to get a razor edge on a super smooth surface. they are also generally thicker than automotive non-paper tapes.
