bandit1 Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 IS this the stuff you guys use to rechrome the chrome parts in your models????????? http://www.megahobby.com/images/view.aspx?productId=37539 as far as my understanding you have to use a black base coat? i want to try this stuff but i want to make sure im doing things right so i dont screw something up since some of this stuff is expensive and im not made of money?
BigBad Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Good thing you bring this up, I bought the same thing but I'm not too sure how to work this so it make a decent finish. I saw an article in an "other" magazine and they used gloss black Tamiya spray for the bottom coat. After that they applied the Alclad. The chrome effect was pretty convincing.
SuperStockAndy Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 I heard to use normal ENAMEL glass black as an undercoat.
Rob Z Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 I've heard that gloss black or a dark gloss blue then shoot the Alclad. Reason for the blue instead of the black is for a more convincing chrome finish.
Chillyb1 Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Well, Alclad II chrome is amazing stuff. In my experience, Alclad's own black base coat is the best paint to use under the chrome. If you don't have their base black, then Testors/Model Master gloss black enamel is also very good. i've never had good luck using any color other than black. Alclad II chrome is not particularly difficult to use, but it does take a little practice because you have to shoot it at very low pressure in very few, very light coats over the base black.
GeeBee Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 I've been using this for some time now, first time I used it, I wasn't impressed, but I seemed to have got the idea on how to use it now, I use Revell black enamel thinned with cellulose thinners, just makes the enamel dry quicker, then put on about 2 coats of the Alclad, you don't want to spray it like you would with most paints, but you need to use the airbrush as a brush, it's harder to explain than to do, depending on what airbrush you are using depends on the pressure to use, last time I used my old Paasche F1 set to around 20 p.s.i and I'm pretty happy with the results.
crazyjim Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Gloss black ENAMEL basecoat is supposed to be used under Alclad. I've cheated and used Plasticote black primer with Testors clear gloss enamel over it. I didn't have a can of gloss black at the time.
