LDO Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 In a few years, when I get my master Plumbing license, I want to have a company of my own. I decided to build a box truck model and put my name on the side of it, just for kicks. I don't know if anyone uses extended-cab pickups for a box truck, but the hobby shop I went to didn't have any single-cab trucks, so I went with what they had. I'm sure I'll build another one in the future. The box is sitting on a little stand to hold it at ride height. It looks high but it's just right. I measured one of the trucks at work. The box is shorter than the truck I measured, but I wanted to keep the wheelbase 184 inches. Some trucks have long boxes, some are short. It's only a concept model, not a replica of any specific truck. I love Evergreen styrene, btw. Sorry if the pics are too big. I'm away from home and can't resize them here.
RyanSilva Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Pics look fine. I want to build a truck myself only a flatbed version similar to a welding truck. You going with dually wheels?
LDO Posted May 1, 2007 Author Posted May 1, 2007 I want dually wheels but don't know where to get them. this is my first model of a work vehicle and I'm clueless on aftermarket stuff. Oh btw it's going to get at least one more full-width step up to the box. Maybe two. They're going to look odd though. I'm going make them have rough texture then paint the tops bright green. This will simulate Astroturf. I'm getting that on my real truck because I once slipped and busted my @$$ on diamond plate.
RyanSilva Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 http://www.fredsresinworkshop.com/trailer_...auler_parts.htm they dont come with tires though..
LDO Posted May 1, 2007 Author Posted May 1, 2007 His website is hard to read. I'm sure he understands what he's telling us, but I don't. Is there any other source for dually wheels...and tires?
1320wayne Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 I don't mean to sound like I am talking down, but what's hard to understand? The web site shows the wheels, the price, and the address to send your money to get those items. They are great resin items. I have bought some before and they have great detail and paint up really nice. Your source of these items is most likely limited and this has all of the choices that you need.
1320wayne Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 By the way, your mockup looks cool. I'm sure that it will look great when it is done.

The way he uses "Late Model" and "Modified" when describing his wheels. I don't know if he's talking about wheels for cars or trucks. Why not make a separate page for each type?
RyanSilva Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 The link sends you directly to the dually wheels, i dont see why the confusion. I can tell the difference between latemodel (race cars) and modifieds, so i dont see a need for fred to have 2 different pages.. The only other sources for dually wheels would be ford f350 from monogram, or getting the snap together kits of the dodge or chevy from AMT on ebay or a hobbt shop. id go with freds though 6bucks for 2 reear wheels and 2 fronts..
LDO Posted May 1, 2007 Author Posted May 1, 2007 The link sends you directly to the dually wheels, i dont see why the confusion.  Holy Bleep! I didn't scroll down on the main page! I went to the page about wheels and saw what looks like dually wheels with race car tires mounted on them. Man I feel like a dork.
RyanSilva Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Yes you are a dork for that one, but don't worry about it . You will need your own tires for this though.. but if you want the ultimate in realistic rubber American satco makes bridgestone 1 ton, you would need 2 packages though, unless you got some tall skinny truck wheels in your stash, thats be great. http://cgi.ebay.com/Satco-10013-Bridgeston...VQQcmdZViewItem The resin wheels from 4d were molded from this kit above, so your better off trying to get the kit first. link--> CLICK HERE
LDO Posted May 1, 2007 Author Posted May 1, 2007 I can't view ebay on this gov't computer Are you saying I could buy the AMT kit and just raid it for the wheels and tires (and I assume suspension)?
RyanSilva Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 No suspension, its axle through style chassis on the snap duallys. But the kit comes with decent wheels and tires if you can get it for under 20... ifnot then go aftermarket with above links. Use the suspension from the chevy kit your using, it should work fine.
charlie Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 hey lee what about replica minutares of maryland they some real nice chevy alco wheels.
ronr Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Lee, This site has some nice dual wheels and tire . Have a set myself and they are cool. http://modelhaus.com/kits_shopwindow.cfm

455 Rocket Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Do the wheels from Miniatures of Maryland look similar to these?
mikemodeler Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Something is wrong with the link. Nothing comes up. Try www.modelhaus.com . I have a set of their resin 1 ton wheels and tires and they are beautiful. $11 for unplated set with tires and $13 for a plated set. Great service, product and people! Mike Scheve
LDO Posted May 2, 2007 Author Posted May 2, 2007 I ordered 2 sets from Modelhaus. It doesn't do me any good to get wheels if I still need tires. I spoke with Norm Veber about his Dually wheels. He said they're more appropriate for a nice custom street dually than a work truck.
455 Rocket Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 These are actually Tim Powers' Scale Resin Detailers (no longer in business) wheels. I got 3 sets 10+ years ago and had them chrome plated. I just wanted to know if Norm's looked similar as these are the best I've ever seen and I'd like to get some more.
LDO Posted May 3, 2007 Author Posted May 3, 2007 A little bit more work. Just a general cleanup. I cut off the top leading edge of the box. laid down some strip styrene, then put in some Milliput Superfine White putty to get the rounded edge. I couldn't find any quarter-round plastic big enough so I did it the old-fashioned way. I also dug that trench on the sid a little deeper with a Dremel so I can lay some Bondo in it. It's cut because I accidentally picked it up when cutting the front of the box. I decided to just glue it back together and lay a .015 strip on the end to make up for the width of the cut. It ain't easy keeping it all symmetrical while cutting with hand tools.
framescr8pintoy Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 this is for ryan, i dont know if you happen to see mine that i posted awhile back, but its a welding truck that i started building. unfortunately havent had time to work on it but its just an idea. where can i find a set of those dually wheels...the chromed ones...thats what id like to run on some of my models.
LDO Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 Your welding truck looks great. The wheels on the street truck are from Replicas and Miniatures Company of Maryland. I don't have their phone number handy but they are in the model car magazines. They do not have a website.
