Hypermung Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 This model has appeared on 'The bay', & I was wondering if it was built by a member on this forum ?. http://www.ebay.com/itm/58-1958-PLYMOUTH-SAVOY-PRO-BUILT-ONE-KIND-1-25-PROMO-SCALE-AMT-MODIFICATION-/140614078027?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20bd408e4b.... There was a thread started back in June last year by Jon Cole where he cut the roof off & cut the body in half of an AMT Belvedere to correct the bananna bend in the body, & there was also talk of turning it into a Savoy.http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=32543&hl=%2B58+%2Bplymouth&fromsearch=1.... There was never an update (that I remember) on this build, & I was wondering if it is the same car?
Jon Cole Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 The corrected '58 Plymouth is still in need of completion. It's too nice not to finish. Won't likely be a Savoy, a Fury, or the Belvedere. I'm leaning towards a mild cleaned up Custom. I just started the Hudson, after that the Plymouth is one of two models I want to get to.
Hypermung Posted October 3, 2011 Author Posted October 3, 2011 Thanks for clarifying that Jon. I thought it was too co-incidental that there were 2 people modifying the same fault outa the same kit, but this must have been the case.. Perhaps the builder of this example gained enthusiasm from your original thread?. I hope you will post some updates on the 58 once you start her again. There's nothing I like more than a fine Forward Looker (except maybe a fine forward lookin redhead).
peekay Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 It's a shame about the Belvedere, one of my favourite cars. I would buy it again if AMT/Round 2 would deal with that bend themselves. The side trim and roof would have to be fixed too but it would then be one of their best kits. As it is I'll never build it. But I agree, the Savoy looks great.
charlie8575 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 That is a very nicely-executed model, to be sure. Very nice work with the side-spear. Charlie Larkin
charlie8575 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Ouch on the price though.... I'll second that statement. Too bad he didn't do a second one to send to a good caster. That would probably become said caster's best-seller or pretty close to it. If I had the patience and (mostly) ability to rework that kit like that, I would. In the interim, I'll simply build what I have and do my best to make it presentable. Charlie Larkin
Drake69 Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Forgive my ignorance, but what is the actual problem with the kit itself? I have it and don't see any issues with mine (not knowing what to look for). Is it a premolded problem or a warped problem?
MrObsessive Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 (edited) Allen, the problem from the start is the body wasn't designed/tooled correctly. '57-'58 Plymouth Furys have trim that should be dead on straight from nose to fin. If you look at the kit body....especially from a rear ¾ view, you can see the body has a definite "banana" shape or bend to it. On that particular body style, the tailfins actually start just behind the doors-----and bump up towards the rear. RC2's kit has a downward slope rendering the trim to follow this body line which makes it all the more awkward. Some in the past had said that the 1:1's trim was not actually lined up.............we're not talking alignment, but an actual curve to the beltline itself. I was told by someone who worked at AMT that this kit was being tooled right around the time RC2 stepped in. Whoever took over didn't/wouldn't take the time to make sure the body was correct..........they just put it out there as is, and the result is what you see to this day. I'm a bit passionate about this car as my Dad had a '57 many years ago..........so I can remember the car quite well, and when I first saw the box art when the car was intro'd I knew it was all wrong. Hope this helps! Edit: Just as an aside, the roof isn't quite correct either as it has a definite "chop" to it. That can be subjective though, but if I were building it, I'd want to fix that too! MrObsessive Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 (except maybe a fine forward lookin redhead). Ditto on the redhead! (I'm gonna get in trouble for this! )
Drake69 Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Yeah, the banana bend is quite obvious to me now, dang it. Well, there's not much I can do really to correct that without shaving down the body, puttying, then recarving out the fin shape, so I guess I'll leave it that way. I think I can still make it look good irregardless.
