VooDooCC Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 I hope this is the right spot to post this... This is only my second model ever and I wanted to document my progress, while getting tips and suggestions. I ran into some issues in the first step of the instructions: There are alignment pegs and holes where the airbags meet the chassis and the bottom half of the axle housings meet. The problem is that either the pegs are too tall, or the holes are too thin. I'm not sure rather I should pin drill out the hole and then cut the peg flush or just cut the peg down. I'm still new to this and don't want to screw anything up too badly.
whale392 Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Being as this is a snap kit, you have to press the suspension down over the pins until it snaps past the initial rough spot and locks into the retaining rings. I took a drill bit and slightly enlarged the holes so that I could take it back apart, better facilitating test-fitting.
butchey Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Well the should go together with no problem but efin the dont pin drill the holes shoulden take much just enough to clean them!

Sorry, I'm still new to this, but I thought snap kits were the kind you don't use glue or paint for?
Sticks Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 (edited) Justin Like you this truck was my second, the kit requires no glue at all but you can still paint it. I painted mine as it gave me practice with the painting side of things and enjoyed doing the fine detail side of things inside of the cab as well. Enjoy Edited October 18, 2011 by Sticks
VooDooCC Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 Just went and looked at it again, the pieces did snap together. WTH? It says skill 2 and specifically says not to glue the wheels, so I assumed the rest of it had to be glued. That takes all of the fun out of it for me. It's opened and I don't have my receipt, so I doubt it would be worth even trying to return it to hobby lobby. Sorry for the rant.
whale392 Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 This is a really nice kit. Just because it is a 'Snapper' doesn't mean it is junk. The only bad part of the kit are the wheels/tires and the rest builds up nicely. Modify it like I did and just build it. I promise it will look GOOD when done up and painted.
VooDooCC Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) Alright, sorry, I jump to conclusions too fast sometimes. When I heard snap, I was thinking like the ones I had when I was like 7 and they were a sloppy fit and more caricatures than anything. Edited October 19, 2011 by VooDooCC
cowboysevens Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 if you allready glued it then its an easy fix, just cut the pins, pull suspension back off then take off the rest of the pin on each air bag/frame then glue the air bags directly to the frame mounts.
Wagoneer81 Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Alright, sorry, I jump to conclusions too fast sometimes. When I heard snap, I was thinking like the ones I had when I was like 7 and they were a sloppy fit and more caricatures than anything. These trucks seem to me to be the Holy Grail of 'snap kits'... They were originally engineered and marketed as snapkits but after a while, they were just marketed as a model kit... The Revell Peterbilt 359 is engineered the same way as the W900. But, as others have said, they do build up nicely. They're an easy way for me to add numbers, cheaply, to my own fleet... I'm posting these pictures with the intent of inspiring you to work with this kit, and not get frustrated with it... the end result is well worth the effort. This one I did, using the optional decals from the kit with the company logo and lettering decals made on my computer... This Pete 359 is basically the same kit as the W900. Revell just changed the body and the body mount on the frame, everything else, frame, suspension, driveline, is the same in both kits. Shoot, since these kits are pretty inexpensive, I won't hesitate to chop one up and get a little crazy with it. They lend themselves to modifications quite well... This is the same kit as the orange and black Pete... So, there you have it, I hope these help. If you have any questions about how these go together, feel free to PM me and I'll help you out as best as I can.
clayton Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 My snap KW,Thia was a eBay junkyard, had to go from ground up with this one. home made toolbox/headache rack. Decals by Mag.
VooDooCC Posted October 20, 2011 Author Posted October 20, 2011 You guys inspired me to work on it..well done, those are some good looking trucks. My brother used to drive over the road and local both, and I went with him from time to time, but seemed like all 5 companies he drove for always put him in Internationals, so it made us envious of KW drivers, lol. If this goes together smoothly enough I plan to give it to him, now that he can't drive anymore. That's why I was a little upset when I heard snap. Wagoneer: Was that flatbed a kit? I've been thinking that if I keep this one or build up another one that it needs a trailer, and would work great for the previous model that I broke the wheels off.

I have two more of these W900's in my stash and want to get several of the Petes... The only issue with these kits is that the tires can be warped, making assembly tricky. Patience and superglue usually solves that problem... Yes, the trailer is the current AMT/Round2 re-issued Freuhauf flatbed kit. It's a nice kit that builds up easily and really compliments any truck kit.
VooDooCC Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 Thanks, I'll probably pick that up. Still don't have any pics yet, but I've got to test fit a few more parts, then I'm hoping to get it painted Monday or Tuesday..supposed to be a bit warmer both of those days, but rain monday morning. Since I gotta paint out in the garage, I don't want the humidity to affect anything too badly.
Wagoneer81 Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 (edited) Yeah, I paint in the garage too, and I never paint when it's raining. I've ruined to many paintjobs that way... We're looking forward to seeing new pics! You say in your first post that this is only your second model. You picked the perfect forum to join as a new modeler. This is a really good group of people and will answer just about any question you have. Don't hesitate to ask questions, as the only dumb question is the one that remains unasked... VooDooCC Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 I made a couple of stops at other forums, but this one seems to have a lot more traffic and knowledge being passed around. No progress made today, I was going to, but my wife became concerned when I turned off football. So, it was football Sunday again, lol.
VooDooCC Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) Got the first half layer of primer down. It took pretty much all day to dry and by the time I finally felt it was dry enough to handle moving and flipping to get the other areas, I thought it was getting a little too chilly to try spraying anymore. Now the forecast for the next 5 days is 62 and rain/51 and rain/53 mostly cloudy/4 partly cloudy/55 partly sunny, so I'll just have to risk it. It's just primer and not the color coats so I should be okay right? I have my air compressor inside and use acrylics, it's the aerosols that the wife hates the smell of. EDIT: I know a lot of people say priming isnt necessary on anything but the body, but it really helps the paint I use (createx) EDIT: Got the other side primed and hoping it dries. Found out something very interesting...it felt dry, didn't really have a smell to it anymore, accidentally touched where I sprayed a 2nd coat and wiped off the first coat. Truck parts Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Guys, I like your models alot. i too work in the garage
VooDooCC Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 After going everywhere I could think of locally and not coming up with anything. I have to order some flock and paint. I was just going to go with whatever colors I could get, but since I'm ordering them and have a choice now, I can't decide what I want. I know I'm going with a blue cab, but trying to figure out the interior. I'm kind of thinking tan seats, I have burnt sienna but that may be a bit too dark. I'm leaning towards black for the floor, walls, ceiling, curtain, etc. but not sure if a lighter color would go better. What do you think? BTW, I want to stick with acrylics, and have had good luck with Model Masters in the past.
whale392 Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Justin, do you have a Hobby Lobby there in Findlay? (I think I remember one being there when I pass through) If so, they sell Createx paints and every now and then have some Flocking materials come in. They also have embossing powders over in their Scrap-booking section. Let me know what you are looking for, as we have a hobby shop here by the Dayton Mall, and I do trip over to Columbus quite a bit.
VooDooCC Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 We have a hobby lobby, but they only had the this variety of pack of flocking and at least a couple of the bottles had leaked so it was all over the card. Plus they wanted $25 for it. I wasn't sure if embossing powder would work, those were a little cheaper at hobby lobby, and joann fabrics had a 4oz can of clear embossing for $10. They have createx paint, but usually a pitiful selection for $4.59 for 2 oz, but I've found it quite a few places for $2.99 for 2 oz. The other paints are about that big of a price difference too.
ranma Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I just completed this same kw painted myistic emrel green testors costom lacvr paints
VooDooCC Posted November 4, 2011 Author Posted November 4, 2011 I picked up the clear embossing powder today from joann fabrics, it was only $6 plus tax since they run sales all the time. I also picked up some plastic spoons to try it on before screwing up the model. I hope to at least do some test samples tomorrow, but not guaranteeing anything. This build is taking a lot longer than I expected from getting distracted so much. Rick, do you have any pics of yours? I'm really struggling to figure out what color to do the interior.
Jim B Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 Tan or gray-shades are always nice. Here's mine in tan:
