Guest Johnny Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Saw a first for me today. A KW half cab and I couldn't get my phone quick enough to get a picture. Would have been a sad one anyway as it was just what was left of one. it was being hauled to a local scrap yard on a flatbed when it passed by me! No wheels and no rear axles but appeared to still have engine and transmission. The company name was blacked out all except Motor Freight and Ontario Canada! It was yellow and either black or dark green! Looked like it was pulled out a a swamp with all the vegetation growing through it and the amount of rust scale around the bottom half.
mackinac359 Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 The half cab (model CBE) by Kenworth was used for fleet operations. The idea was to save weight of a full cab. Some had sleeper berths behind the driver - a low coffin-like area. Very strange looking truck. Evan Hermel built one several years ago in 1/25th scale. Tim
Guest Johnny Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Thanks Tim! I had never seen one except in a picture I think on your site! Definitely a strange looking truck! Went back by the yard but they were closed by the time I picked up the wife from work. Maybe tomorrow if they haven't crushed it yet!
Guest Johnny Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Yes that truck model but was yellow with black or dark green markings.
BigBad Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 And to think some people hate the Lonestar... This one takes the ugly stick a little far. By the way, CCC (Crane Carrier Corp) used to have a similar cab arrangement for cement mixers, way back in the 70's. They looked a little better than this, though.
mackinac359 Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Freightliner and Autocar also had half cabs, or cab beside engine models. The Fliner and Acar versions were primarily mixer and crane trucks. Tim

Hessel Hemstra Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 There is a resin version of an Autocar halfcab. I would like more info about that. Will post some photo's Hessel
mr cheap Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 most where cement trucks the rest where yard trucks with the fast high jack rear axle air lift and fitht wheel as long as they had plates a go any where truck
Guest Johnny Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 They are different than a spotter mule!
disabled modeler Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 I like the ugly trucks....most of my builds have very little chrome think the old utilitarian work horse look is COOL!
cargostar Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 International offered one man cabs for years. They were designed for the steel industry, so that they could load long steel on either side of the cab. They had a hatch in the roof for entry/egress. They started with a standard cab and then narrowed it, and centered it on the chassis.
cargostar Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Yup. Just like that. They were doing them back into the 50's, and are still doing them today.
donkeypuncher76 Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 6 months late on this one, but that ugly sucker looks like a "yard dog", it actually has a coffin sleeper? almost as scary as the old 30-40's where the nose of the trailer was a "coffin sleeper"lol. wild..
