when i was 15 or so, Dad had a '60 F100 that we used solely for emergency duty... well; we got let out of school early because it was snowing an inch an hour and Dad had heard this was going to last for at least three days straight... so he, Mom, and i piled into the truck and made the trip up to the grocery (ain't it always the way) for the necessities just in case. we were choogling along around 40mph through 4-6 inches of slushy crud and a semi came over the hill covering both lanes of the two-lane.... Dad never let off the gas and took the truck off the road and halfway up the bank until we passed the semi and he got her back on the blacktop..... i learned a LOT about snow driving that day.

. . . and what a skilled driver your dad was.

I return to Michigan every year for Christmas (Sterling Heights). And every year it has snowed during my visit. I'm sure I'll get my yearly practice on how to drive in a blizzard this year too.

Still green here in my part of the great White North!! Mildest November on record...we had a bunch of rain yesterday and today that would have made for a heck of a dump of snow if it had been several degrees colder. I'm debating on whether I need to get the mower out again...the grass is pretty green! Very unusual for here.

I always look forward to a good snow. It makes everything look so clean. Back in the day,it meant airing up the inner tubes, a bon fire,a couple bottles of whiskey,a few friends and having a blast! Now,it's my wife, daughter (when she will) and son,a couple cups of coffee and trying the old Bronco out.

I don't work outside anymore so winter doesn't bother me as much as it used to... Although I do get stiff and sore more easily, now...

I can hear the ice and snow falling off the trees today, we got about 2" over the last day or two...

It wouldn't be so bad if all these know-it-all, mental-midgets with 4wd or AWD vehicles would remember that, regardless of traction control and perceived stability, they still have to be able to STOP! Last winter, I had several people blast around me and my slow, old 4wd Wagoneer (I'm sorry, even 25-30mph can be too fast when the road is snowcovered, I am a cautious driver when it gets nasty. I was an EMT for 8 years and have seen too much not to be cautious...) Anyway, back on track; they'd usually cuss me and/or send some less than endearing hand gestures my way as they went by, only to end up in the ditch or field several miles down the road... Their comments were always the same; "I dunno what happened, I hit the brakes and lost control..." Being a nice guy, I'd always stop to make sure they were ok, or if they needed to use the phone BUT, I would always refuse to pull them out... Hey, cuss out the wrecker driver and see how much help they are to you... I told more than one, "The way you passed me back there, the ditch is the safest place for you... It's not my fault you suffered from Cranial-Rectal Inversion..."

Ahhh....I love winter!

Amen to that! 4 wheel drive is nice, but it is NOT a protective force field! Driving still requires some degree of mental aptitude on your part. B)

And people wonder why my fwd Grand Am handles better than their big a$$ 4x4...................... it has nothin to do with the car, it's all about the driver.
