Green Duster Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I build because I like to. I don't care what other people think of the cars. I haven't been in a club for at least 10 years. I like hanging around with other modelers, but where I live you can't get anybody together for a club anymore. I build because I want to!

(still had my fare share). i been building an scratchin ever since , im 33 now and it gives me a peace of mind when im sitting at the bench .. my kids love it when i build or make something . oh and as my mother in law tells my wife ... VW Dave Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Been building for 40 plus years & I don't know how to do anything else. As everyone else here I'm a car nut, & find great satisfaction in a model well built. Take about 5 years off that, and I'd say "you took the words right outta my mouse." I come from an artsy-craftsy family that also is into cars.....it just kinda happened. My late mother built models, and both of my brothers used to as well.

It actually brings a tear to my eye. My finished model collection was destroyed during divorce. Along with many other things.
Darren B Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 (edited) For me its to relieve all the stress and bs that is in my life, it gets me away even for just 30 mins here or and hour there, as I do not have much time to build much of anything at the moment, but just thinking bout what im gonna do next on my current build helps keep me out of the loony bin. Man sorry to hear about loosing your model collection, I have a wife that would do that to mine if we got to that point in our relationship, she has destroyed some builds on my work bench before so i know its in her if it got to that point so I feel for you bad. I can see it happening and really feel for you. Hang in there and just get back into it and keep your head up........................................

Thanks, I managed to get my stash out of the house and into a storage unit so it wasn' t a complete loss. I wish I had done the same with my built kits but just didn't get around to it. It is amazing that you can't trust the person you married. In my case it was 20 years!
Tye Brown Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I feel ya pain Rob, I just recently went through that & strangely all my glass shelves fell down and smashed all my built models. Luckily one of my good friends got most of my un built kits out before they went to plastic heaven
Ben Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Because the voices tell me to. I do whatever the voices say. Oh man..........that was gonna be my response!!!!!!!!!!!! You beat me to it!!!!!!!!!!
RodneyBad Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Because the voices tell me to. I do whatever the voices say. i wish they only say that.. No, really, I wish they would only say that.. Shhhhh, I hear something. Noo, I wasn't talking to anybody.. What? Sorry.. Gotta go..
Guest Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 For anumber of reasons. It's relaxing(most of the time), I love cars, and I cant afford the real deal, so building them smaller helps there as well. I enjoy the feeling of looking at something I have put alot of work into, and being able to say I did that!, instead of looking at the work somone else did. That's one of the reasons , besides price, lol, I dont buy pre made die casts, etc. I love the feeling of doing it myself, and it gives me a creative outlet.
Patrick2005 Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I build model cars because I can't afford to build the real versions
58 Impala Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 It's a hobby my dad introduced me to when I was 7, 47yrs later I enjoy building models as much as that 1st one. Like some of you have said, it's a way to have all the cars I can't afford in 1:1. It's a very relaxing and satisfying hobby.
disabled modeler Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Wow, that is a very cool display. It actually brings a tear to my eye. My finished model collection was destroyed during divorce. Along with many other things. Sorry to hear that Rob I really feel your pain...back in late July we had a small tornado go through my neighborhood and my build room lost a window. Many shelves models fell got crushed found some parts outside over the next two weeks....just keep your head up and rebuild what you can.
Nitrozilla Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Building models led to my first job, in a roundabout way. A friend down the street introduced me to them when I was 11 in 1964. At age 15 my mom refused to give me an advance on my allowance to buy the newly released Charlie Allen F/C. So I stormed out of the house and went for a walk to cool off. Long story short, a half an hour later I've got a job busting tires at Golden State Tire Distributors in El Monte, CA. Ergo my love of nostalgia funny's and the avatar in my signature line. OMG, in 2014 it'll be 50 years of building. OMG !!!!!!
Greg Pugh Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I can't believe you guys that are married to women that would destroy your models if you got into a fight or worse, a divorce. Why would you be with someone that would attack you there? That's just crazy to me. I would go to prison for what I'd do if my wife intentionally destroyed any of my personal belongings (especially my models) and she knows that so we don't have any problems like that. Not to mention, she respects me and I respect her. Neither one of us would hit each other in the knee caps like that.
Ben Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I had an ex psycho........uh, I mean....girlfriend that thought she was getting revenge by knocking over a stand up shelf full of built models that I had. So, to get back at her, I rebuilt all of them! One in particular was the ERTL John Deere backhoe. I had built it straight out of the box without paint and had saved it for many years. After she broke it, I rebuilt it, painted it with John Deere yellow, made the front bucket articulate and the bucket on the rear fully articulate as well! Ended up being ten times nicer than it was originally! HA! Showed her! One of many reasons I prefer to stay single!!!!!!!!
Rob McKee Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 (edited) Thanks guys, I had a feeling she would hit me where it hurts most. I saved my stash first because it was easier than packing each built car up for storage. 20/20 hind sight I would have been better off just throwing them into boxes un-protected. At least I would still have them. Woman can become extremely vengfull during a divorce. Believe me they go for anything they know will hurt you. I am sure there are some men out there that would do the same but from the stories I have heard it is standard for the women to get revenge. I didn't do anything I shouldn't have done, I just wanted out because it was a very bad scene. (Long story) Regardless, she didn't get the best of me and I am happy to be away from her. I don't think anyone gets into a relationship knowing that the other would do something like this. Now I build many kits and have great memories of the first, second, or third time I built them in the past. Moral of the story is, never let them get you down. I loved this hobby long before I met my ex-wife and will love the hobby for the rest of my life. To that I say "I do!" Rob Edited December 31, 2011 by Rob McKee
