Yes, it's something called 'education'.

What do you think my mother would have done to me if I hadn't greeted people, said please, thank you, etc., when she took me places when I was a kid? So I better did it and it somehow took hold.

You can not blame technogoly on how some one was raised, that falls on the person parents

You can, because people rather waste their time playing with those stupid gadgets instead of teaching their children manners. Hence we have a generation of social savages out there already and it will get worse.

Yes people have become way to additive to their phones, I think for some people its the most important part of their lives, and I dont get it, I have a smart phone, but I dont spend all my time on it.

It is amazing how much I see people on their phones in a typical day....my office is on the ASU campus in downtown Tempe..when I walk to lunch, everyone seems to be walking around playing w/ their phones, same thing in Starbucks, same in the restaurants...not just college kids, but a wide age range I've noticed. I'll check my email or Twitter while I'm waiting on a meal to come out, but I can keep the phone in my pocket when I'm walking...

I've had people almost walk into my car when I have the right of way at intersections because they walk out in the street oblivious to their surroundings...

We've lived through technological change since the day the first caveman figured out fire. But all of the major technological milestones of the past... automation, the automobile, advances in medicine, electricity, flight, etc, while they had a dramatic impact on our lives and how we lived them, they didn't dramatically change how we interact with other people. They made our lives easier, or more convenient, or less labor-intensive... but they didn't change the basic fundamental idea of human interaction with others.

But the technology we're going through now is changing how we interact with others. We can now say anything we want under cover of an anonymous screen name and instantly put it up on the web where millions of people can see it, we can have thousands of so-called "friends" via social networking without actually ever meeting any of these people face to face. We have become more accessible to others, but in a weird, "non-accessible" way. We have more potential methods of contact with others than ever before, yet actual face-to-face, in-person, human interaction seems to be fading. We're all inside our own little techno-bubbles, "interacting" with each other but not in the way we had been for thousands of years.

It's interesting..not just w/ social networking, but in work work also.....on my current project, I haven't actually met any of the clients I'm working with other than on the phone and via email..they are in Louisiana, I'm in AZ. And the two local colleagues in my company that are I work with are in the office once a week or so, and I usually work from home 2 days a week..

Seems like my profession is one of the few remaining where one still gets into contact with non-virtual people on a regular basis. :D

Yeah, but they never have anything interesting to say... ;)

I am reasonably "savvy" with some new technology. I obviously DO have and use a PC. I don't have, nor do I want a cell phone. Everyone else I know has one, but I personally don't feel the need to have one. I use a Digital Camera. My daughter just got me a 44" LED flat screen HD TV for Christmas and I have to admit I love it. It is a lot clearer and BIGGER than the 21" CRT TV we had previously. I have to admit that when I look under the hood of new cars today I'm kinda puzzled... The engine compartment of the '59 Dodge that I sold 7 years ago was a lot more "user friendly". I still get annoyed with commercials on Cable TV... remember when cable started there weren't supposed to be any commercials because the cable subscription fees were gonna cover everything... yeah right. Now you get 12 commercials every 7 minutes on every station and you can't flip to another station to escape them because they ALL go to commercials at the same time. Thankfully there is a MUTE button on the remote.

One of my favorite pieces of new tchnology is the DVR. Record the shows you want, then watch them when you want to watch them... and fly through the commercials at super-fast forward. Most systems allow you to record several programs simultaneoulsy. No reason to sit through commercials anymore. No more fumbling with VHS tapes... and the DVR never runs out of "tape."

Yes, they are great..I've have had them over 10 years..pretty much am able to avoid commercials all the time..if I want to watch something in near-real time, I usually start watching 15 min in so I can fwd through the commericals. It won't run out of 'tape', but my older tiVo used to fill up all the time because I'd forget to delete items... my new one has a lot more capacity and can record up to 4 programs simultaneously....haven't used my VHS recorder in over 10 years...

About the only show I really want to see the commercials on is the Super Bowl... :)

I agree. With the Super Bowl, the commercials are the show! :D

Yes DVR's are great, I do that for a few shows, but I do that for all the NASCAR race's, not only to skip the commerical's but skip thru all the fluff stuf before or during the race.

You can replace "stupid gadgets" with "plastic models", and the outcome is just the same.

Blame the people, not the technology.

Chicken or the egg? People make the technology, or technology make the people? Either way , society is changed forever & forever changing. I don't know about World War III, but World War IV will be fought with sticks & stones! Possibly the same stones I was grounded from using to "bang" my rolls of caps when I forgot to say "yes sir" to my Grandfather. A bit extreme perhaps, but it IS the road we're all on..... whether we're driving or not!

OK. I'm either a philosophical genius or a village idiot. Either way, I came to this particular village because I have only finished 1 build in over 30 years. Ya'll got me side tracked & I'm hoping you only come here when paint/glue is drying. I built a very large part of K.C. Missouri area (KS. included) until the powers that be, using the technology that controls us all, decided there was no more $ to build with. Look at the S.E. corner of 135th & Metcalf. It was a ghost town when I had to leave nearly 3 yrs ago. Technology & the financial paranoia that accompanies it did away with a lot of incomes & family structure. I had to move to the armpit of TX because it was the only viable solution to keep my family together. I took on a series of menial jobs that I was not physically capable of doing, got injured, got reaquainted with my favorite childhood hobby, then met ya'll through technology that I never had time for before because I spent too much time building a society that ended up ---- on me. But hey, Let's build some models!!!!!!!
