oldscool Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 (edited) Here is some of the paint work on the DD kit: The body is Tamiya pearl white over the bare plastic and the chassis is brush painted with Testors enamel just like in the old days. It took a month to dry! The engines are also brushed with Testors enamel and took just as long to dry. The silver parts are Tamiya metallic silver which is very bright. So far, I have drilled the exhausts and the engines for plug wires Thanks for looking gus Edited March 3, 2012 by oldscool
oldcars Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Looking good so far. This has been one of my favorite kits for fifty years. Hope you don't mind if I follow along as you build this(and hopefully the other one too). P.S. Back in the day(we know when that was) every kit I built had yellow engines. Just drifting in time..... Richard

Richard Feel free to follow along. I got the body clear coated today and the rear axle painted as well. This is only the second DD that I have ever built, the first was in the late 60s when I was a preteen. More pics coming soon gus
Greg Myers Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Lookin' good so far. One of my favorites too.
oldscool Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Finally got some more done on this one. Wired both engines and assembled more of the chassis. The red brush paint gives it that epoxy coated look and if you look closely I had to notch the left side rail to clear the oil filter. gus
oldscool Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 (edited) Here's one more of the cockpit detail. The dash is covered with bmf and doesn't look that rough textured in reality. I hate to cover the nice quick change with that chrome cover but they were used back then. I'm also going to paint the harness on the seat. gus Edited February 7, 2012 by oldscool
Pete L. Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Gus, Nice work ...your brush painting is smoother than my spray painting !!!
oldscool Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 Made some more progress on this one.The seat and front end are now in place. Engines and Moon tank are not glued yet and the fit of the intake pipes are ...well...giving me a fit but I will prevail. gus
Greg Myers Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Having built a few of these one knows the pits and foibles. Looking at your build I see you have things nicelly under control . Very nice.
oldscool Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 Having built a few of these one knows the pits and foibles. Looking at your build I see you have things nicelly under control . Very nice. It is a tricky kit to get right and it is amazing that AMT pulled this off back when this kit was first released. I can't believe I built one when I was only 10 or 11 years old. You have to build this thing in a very specific order to get things to line up well. For example the rear axle can't be properly located until the bellhousing is in place. gus
oldscool Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 Getting close to the end now. All it needs are the exhausts and the fuel tank. I still need to add one intake pipe that is giving me fit problems because I shortened it a bit and cut too much off. gus
Romell R Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Oustanding job on this one Gus , are you using the old testers bottle paints? and if so are you airbrushing them on? , the paint looks so nice.

I'm using the old Testors bottle paint for the red and yellow. They are brushed and the trick is to thin them just enough but they still take a month to dry enough to handle.
Joker Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Great close up pixs Gus. Like your avatar too for some reason..LOL
oldscool Posted March 7, 2012 Author Posted March 7, 2012 Almost finished now and here's an outdoor pic. Still needs the steering linkage and the intake pipe that I botched up. I may not add decals at all as I kind of like it as is. gus
