Richard crashed his car in practice two days before suffering a concusion and bruised leg, NASCAR officals didn't allow Petty to bring in a backup car so D.K. Ulrich offered his seat to the King. Richard Petty drove the Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 in 1986 with this only exception.

back in the good old days you ran for the BUSCH POLE AWARD not the Bud or COORS Pole award rwmember THE BUSCH CLASH.

I believe thats the Busch pole decal which you would not see on the Petty cars or any other alcohol or tobacco advertisement

I know it did not belong to Petty that is why you see a BUSCH decal on it. As I stated Richard Petty did not permit acohol or tobacco advertisement on his cars.

The contingency decals you see on the front fenders of the cup cars are minor sponsors of the series. You actually get these decals from NASCAR, and the package comes with a diagram showing you where each decal is supposed to go. NASCAR does this all the way down to the local weekly racing series. (Late Models). Nice photo of a rare moment.
