Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 (edited) Here's a fun thread topic (I hope) and I wonder how many of you have pictures that you've taken with famous car builders in both scale and real that you keep for inspiration by your work bench. Don't be shy, please dig up your photos and post them here. Of if you've gotten autographs from your heroes, I'd love to see those too. A few years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of attending my first model car show in Birmingham (an experience I will forever treasure) and I had the distinct pleasure of meeting two of Doctor Cranky's building heroes: Mr. Ken Hamilton and Mr. Pat Covert, about the two nicest and most generous builders I've ever had the honor and pleasure of calling great friends and mentors: Edited February 4, 2012 by Dr. Cranky
Jairus Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I think I met Marilyn Monroe once. I was only three at the time but it left a huge impression on me.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 J, and to think you probably don't have THAT picture! I'd pay to see it!
Patrick2005 Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I had the extreme honor of meeting the one and only Mr. George Barris a few years back
Jantrix Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 When I was a kid in NY, I met two New York heroes Joe Namath and Reggie Jackson. Years later back in NY for OPSAIL 2000, the parade of tall ships in NY harbor, I was a Coast Guard boarding officer and got to meet Ann Margaret. I'll never forget what I said to her. "Ma'am, you need to move your boat please."
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 All right, Patrick, that's what I'm talking about. Nice picture. I remember seeing someone had a picture they'd taken with Mr. Bill Hines. How about some of the folks who might have stuff by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, anyone? Rob, and you didn't get at least an autograph from her?
SuperStockAndy Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Here's me with Roland Leong: (Had to blur myself out )
Haubenschild Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I met Ferguson jenkins about 4 years ago , it was very cool
Harry P. Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Here's me with Roland Leong: (Had to blur myself out ) Why? Are you in the witness protection program?
SuperStockAndy Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 (edited) Why? Are you in the witness protection program? Too young to show my face. I don't know, that might be a good thing though Edited February 4, 2012 by SuperStockAndy
Chuck Most Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Well... there is one modeler on this site whose work I admire- spkgibson, aka Steve Ketterer. He and I are both customers of Dean's Hobby Stop in Flushing, Michigan, and he and I were both there at the same time, although I did not realise it until I posted my purchase from that day in the "What did you get today" thread and he responded saying he saw me buy it. So while I technically haven't met him, I have been in the same building with him at least once. Yeah, that's about all I've got.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 Wow, some great pictures. It's interesting that many who attend car shows will still run into these amazing people and take pictures with them. We better do it because there's a whole generation moving on. Keep 'em coming. Again, I wonder how many folks have collections of these pictures, autographs, any type of memorabilia . . . I know a few builders here have NASCAR vehicles autographed by the drivers.
tabsscale1 Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I met and talked with Dennis Gage last year at the KKOA. I also set down every year and talk to John D'Agostino for 2 or 3 hours. I also set down every year with Gene Winfield and Bill Hines and chat about everything. I only have the picture of me Nad Dennis Gage. and some singles of John. Darrel Starbird Is also at the show as well but to me he is not as friendly as the rest. I have Met Gregg many years ago as we stayed at the same house in Kansas City for the KC Slammers show but haven't been able to go to that show in years. George Barris is there every year as well
SuperStockAndy Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 That's what I'm talking about!!!
Swifster Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I worked 7 years in Indy Car as a corner worker and black flagger. This was between 1991 and 1997. It removed any hero worship I may have had. I've met Rick Mears (probably the only hero I have just because he is soooooooo nice), the Andretti's, Roger Penske, Paul Newman, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Danny Sullivan, etc. Like any portion of the human race, you have some really nice people and some real jerks. The jerks ruin it for everything. I very rarely seek autographs from anyone. I'm a big baseball fan (Tigers) and I've met a few players including Al Kaline. The same holds true for them. I save my picture taking for being with friends or going to 'events'. I go to baseball games and I may get pictures of the players as part of the event, but I don't bother seeking out autographs afterward.

Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 Pamala Anderson is my second cousin ,, does that count. [no seriously] If that's the case, Steve, can you get me an autographed photo? Harry, I thought you'd notice the handle bar mustache.
Harry P. Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 My brother met Pam Anderson poolside in Las Vegas last year. That's about as close to meeting a celebrity that I've ever come!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 Okay, now I realize how the genetic make up goes in your family. Pamela = actress and Steve = Great model builder!
tabsscale1 Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Yeah, yeah, blah blah blah. So who's the chick in the black skirt? That was taken 2 weeks after she was busted for DUI in Cali! She was Holding A Coors Light when I took that picture
